| I've got a 2015 Toyota 4 Runner and I'm looking for a bumper mount for it. I know there are some Diamond trunk lip mounts but I think a bumper mount might be more secure and would allow me to mount the antenna a little lower to clear my garage ceiling. Would mounting the antenna on the bumper drastically reduce antenna efficiency? Also what is the go to bumper mount that would work for my vehicle? |

If the antenna is near the body of the vehicle it will affect performance and depending on how close it is your SWRs may be affected as well. You can expect stations that are in the direction of your car from your antenna position to be weaker and you will be for them as well as your RF will be directed away from them. Anything that is not a NMO mount drilled into the roof is a compromise... |

so it look like a hatch back mount is the only way to go eh?

Anything that is not a NMO mount drilled into the roof is a compromise... That is prolly the best option aside drilled mounts in the roof. Which you could do... Just need the right antennas and if you have a dual band radio you would need a duplexer. |

Wait... there is an antenna mount for luggage rack that folds over? I must work my google fu on this. There are antennas that fold over... But you would want to make sure your luggage rack is electrically connected to the vehicle. Otherwise your ground plane will be crappy and you won't get out very well. Ground plane is a big deal with an antenna that needs one. This is why drilled NMO mounts are a big deal. Once I went from a lip mount to a NMO in the roof I was blown away at the difference in how much better I heard and I got out. |

How much clearance between the roof and garage? If using a dual band radio, use a diplexer to split out a Sti-Co Flexiwhip and either a PCTEL 430-480 MHz knob or another Sti-Co Flexiwhip if the clearance is too small for the knob.
TLF and I pretty much exclusively run 1/4 wave antennas. You'd be amazed at what you can accomplish with one on a NMO mount. In fact, my Trailbazer had a PCTEL UHF knob and a Larsen 1/4 wave VHF antenna...I could still use repeaters 70+ miles away. |
