On here and in the survival forums I constantly see threads asking about license free Comms. As a ham I don't need license free Comms, but I can't seem to get my family interested.

We took a family vacation to the OBX (NC/VA border on the coast) from central Ohio . I wanted to be able to talk between vehicles during the trip. I programmed a BaoFeng UV5ra and my Standard Horizon HX370s to MURS at legal power and wFM and nFM as required. I realize the equipment isn't type approved. I ran on MURS channel 1.

Great Comms with decent range, anyone with 2m simplex experience would know the shortfalls of simplex. It worked quite well on the highway and in town.

This spectrum is VACANT.  I mean no one is there, we heard a box store on the trip there and some warehouse on the way back. There was however the odd truck pulling a reefer that had a data link from the trailer to the cab. You would get an FSK type of data burst when you were near it.

A GMRS license is fairly cheap and its good for your whole family. Gives you options of more power than FRS and repeaters.

I tried getting my kid to get a Technician. I promised him a radio if he did. I made the same promise to my niece. I even showed them a picture of a little girl who had gotten a ticket. No dice - too much like homework.

I got a GMRS license and let them run wild with little Motorolas.

I've been scanning the MURS frequencies for the last six or eight months during my commute and have found that in Alaska, truckers seem to use MURS more than they use CB.  Part of it is because lots of companies up here outfit their trucks with VHF radios for driving the haul road up to Prudhoe Bay and for use in Canada on the Alcan.  It's not busy enough to make the channels useless, but it's more than I expected to hear.  My wife has expressed interest in getting her Tech license to help her in her Reserve job, so I'm going to help her with that and we'll be golden.

You may still hear some drive through window traffic on MURS from time to time.  Cell phones have gotten lots of traffic off the airwaves, and that's fine with me.
