During the Cactus n' Crude MS150 bike ride the other day, I got to talking to some of the amateur radio operators from the Big Spring club. They were telling me something of interest about their new System Fusion repeater. They currently have it set for Auto in and Auto out. From what I've been told a small handful (about as large as the guys in Lubbock who have D*Star) have the new Yaesu mobiles. They have told a people that you have to run a receive PL on analog radios to keep from hearing the digital conversation. What was interesting about this, the members are now complaining that when the system is tied into another Fusion repeater, it will not pass audio with a receive PL set. Just on a hunch I asked what the PL for the two systems were...different. The sad part is I actually believe this could be happening...there appears to be a lack of a high pass filter to scrub the PL's from the audio. Couple that with no PL encoder for the transmitter and that could be problematic...

we're working up a show for the 'digital FM' modes.  I hope to get Gerald and Jeremy in a fisticuffs on the air

Both of our system fusion repeaters have died here

Ours was never linked so I am not sure about that, but yes the tone squelch is good to go with a single auto mode.

I'd be interested in the failure mode: our club got sucked into the $500 repeater craze, now we're stuck with what appears to be a poorly built box that we can't get coordinated.

Several clubs in my area have installed Fusion repeaters.  Every single one has AMS on the input and FM only on the output.

My FTM-100D showed up this afternoon and I'm just getting started with it.  So far, entering my call sign was pretty easy.  One of my good friends is trustee for one that hasn't been put into service yet.  We're planning some experimenting before the club gets their hands on it.  None of the installations have the Wires-X box, so internet linking is not possible.

I did get a chance to have a discussion with an ARES director in Tennessee that swears by Fusion.  They really like the data side.

I'm waiting for four Fusion repeaters to ship.  We will be setting two of ours up on UHF and two on VHF.  In the meantime we have a bit of simplex Fusion activity locally.  I like the mode so far.  I have been wanting to get a DMR repeater up for a while, but didn't really have the support for it.  With Fusion being deeply discounted i was able to get a lot of support.  At least one of these repeaters (the one at the best site) will be setup digital only.  I want people that invested the money in digital radios to get the full digital experience and not cater to the guys that don't want to buy into the mode.  I may explore linking the digital only one to an analog only repeater or a D-Star repeater.  That seems to be the big complaint that I hear.  The fact that the digital modes don't talk to one another out of the box.  Linking different mode repeaters would enable everyone to communicate with whatever their favorite flavor happens to be.

There's a turnkey solution for P25/DMR/Analog...Raytheon C-Bridge.

Most hams want to decode the digital then send it as analog audio over RoIP...doesn't work as it puts way too much latency in most systems. A small amount of latency is okay. In fact for PS use it was needed...

Thanks for the tip!  I'll look into it.
