Their kickstarter has funded and the shield looks like it could be lots of fun!

I'm a little fuzy on what the arduino actually brings to the table for this project???

For voice comms, a mic and speaker are needed; what does an arduino do for voice comms?

For most, if not all, digital modes, standard apps for your laptop already exist; so again arduino does what?

Ditto for the radio - any number of QRP FM/FSK radios already exist, and typically come with things like visual basic programs that allow you to control the radio (some are usb, others may need usb to serial or I2C converter).

I must be missing something here - the arduino in this project just seems like a needlessly complex redundant chunk of hardware that goes in between you mic/spkr or your laptop and the radio???

the arduino is the MCU to perform the interface between the radio and the user, it could have a keypad and driver, you'd spend $200 to duplicate a $30 baofeng, or maybe between your GPS and radio for APRS, or maybe create a beacon, or a scanner, or a remote sensor or remote control project, etc.... actually I just thought of a use for it in shooting... Among other things your arduino could automatically send you ham callsign along with your data. maybe a bluetooth shield on the arduino to interface with your smart phone for control or your bluetooth headset for a radio....

this could be fun...

They've reached their 75k stretch goal with 13 days to go now.

I've been perusing the HamShield library on github to get more insight into the capabilities of the board, others may also be interested.
