I am looking for a radio for my SUV that I can hide away and just have the face exposed. I am looking for pics on setups and antennas.

If you mean only 2m then check this thread out.

If you want HF then FT-857D  or IC-7100  and TS-480SAT  seem to be the main contenders.

What is HF? my tech study guide is in the mail and will be here sat.  And damn those are expensive. Are they worth it?

HF, High Frequency, 3-30 MHz, where the fun stuff happens. Also, 1.8 - 2.0 MHz in the Low Frequency band

Can I access it with a tech license?

You have privileges on 10 meters FM, which is to say not much.

Looks like 28.300 - 28.500 SSB is open to Techs.

ETA:  I believe Tech might have some CW privileges on other HF bands.

ETA:  Techs have CW privileges on small portions of 80, 40, and 15 meters, as well.

Let's back up.

What do you want out of amateur radio?

For a tech or a seasoned General or Extra, A Kenwood V-71 will make you very happy in the 2m and 70cm world.
For a mobile rig it's a hard radio to beat on its performance and simplicity to operate.
My opinion is keep an HF at home and not in the car. The V-71 can serve as a base unit or a mobile. YMMV

Off roading, SHTF, and just something to do. I know a member of Bluecom and if it was here in the midwest I would be all over it.

That is a nice radio for your posted needs.

All I will suggest is a 1/4 wave vertical on a mast of a rollup j-pole for when you are at base camp.  Maybe a nicer 2m/440m dualband for the vehicle.

Get some bnc adapters for your radio to make changing antennas easier.

quarter wave ground plane antenna  - cheap, easy to build, and a solid performer if you can get it up in a tree or on a mast off the chimney.

roll up j pole - pretty cheap, works fairly well and is ultra portable.  Tie some paracord on the end and take it with you in the field - throw it up in a tree.

ed fong j pole - a very simple antenna that you put in a piece of PVC and hang in a tree or put up on a mast.  I have one and it's a great performer for my needs.

BNC adapters - for quick changing coax.

Here's my setup.

Yes I'm using a mag mount.  But I can hit all the repeaters in both bands.  Clear reception without issues.
