What are you guys using for desk mic's? What do you recommend? What should I expect to spend to improve my base hand mic that came with my 857d? Budget mic's are more realistic than broadcast grade gear. |

The Heil mics are set up for ham use. The correct audio response, cord wiring, etc.
I can highly recommend: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/mics/3318.html Heil HandiMic. I used the one for the Icom rigs with an IC-718. A net that I regularly checked in at asked, "What did you do? Get an amp?" No, just this mic. http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/mics/2168.html Have one of these in our club station. I also have the HM-10 Dual, discontinued, of which I get great reports. |

You might want to build a breakout box for the mic plug connection so the stock mic can stay attached but get switched in/out as wanted. Include jacks (1/4"?) for PTT switch(es) and alternative mics. I also included PF and up/down push buttons for the one I did for my TS-590S.
Playing around, I tried a Pyle clone of the Shure SM58 (600 ohm dynamic), mounted on a gooseneck stand on the desk. It worked fine, but is noticably more base/midrange than the stock hand mic. The PDMIC58 was < $13 delivered (amazon prime) and included a cord. Nick |

Try Heil HM-12. It's a good microphone for the money. You will need a cable to connect it to your radio. The microphone has a peak at 2 kHz and is tailored for SSB radios.
Yaesu MD-100 is another good desk microphone for your radio. It comes with a cable included. I've been thinking about selling mine as I don't use it anymore. |

I prefer a headset and a footswitch I use a HEIL BM-10 and an old footswitch from Gainger Heil Pro-Set and an old Treadlite footswitch here. Next would be a mixer and a boom mic, still using the ol' Treadlite footswitch. There are a few threads about audio set-ups here on this forum. |

I have no end of desk mics of all kinds but the ones I like to use are light weight. I mainly use an Astatic 10D head on the typical Astatic desk stand (whatever they are called TGU9 or something). I occasionally use a D-104 or a Shure 444 (no relation). I like light weight mics because when I am on SSB, I am usually kicked back in my chair bullshitting. I hold the mic in my hand when I am talking.
I am too lazy for a foot switch or anything that requires me to sit up straight. On my Flex, I have a Heil PR40 plugged into the balanced input. Its on a Heil desk stand with a PTTbutton on the base. But I don't use it much on SSB. |

I even operate CW that way. I lay back in the chair and just have my arm on the table. When I receive, I lay my head back and close my eyes. I set the bar for laziness pretty high. If the chair didn't swivel, I would be off the air on CW. My computer screen is on my right, so most of the time I have my chair pointed to the right so I can see my computer monitor. But since I am right handed, when I send CW, I have to swivel my chair so my right arm is on the table resulting in me facing the other way. |

But the HM-12 sounds good we are told. I like the smaller size of the HandiMic. With either mic get a foam windscreen from your local Radio Shack or music store. About $1.50 or $2. I got a desk stand for the HM-12 made by Peavy, I think, via eBay for about $20. We already had a footswitch that we use with one of the Heil headsets there at the club station. |
