While I am no fan of the bedlam and chaos of a contest, it often DOES bring out rare DX.
It's a wash. I worked Dodecanese as an ATNO with mucho QRM from a contester. To be able to hear the DX station I actually had to listen off frequency and transmit on frequency. The DX station was slightly garbled but readable. It wasn't readable on frequency because of the QRM. SOmetimes ya hafta think on your feet. |

I did hear 3 or 4 Hawaiian stations contesting (which is 3 or 4 more than I usually hear). Shame the South American stations couldn't get any points (it was wall to wall South American here). |
