In my HamBag, I want to patch my mic through the face plate. I found a bulkhead RJ45 connector and I put a short piece of CAT5 between the Kenwood TM-V71A radio and the bulkhead connector. I didn't get a chance to test it on-air but it functioned correctly to control the unit. Am I missing something?

As long as your mount and cable result in a straight through connection, you should be GTG.

I don't know, Pictures maybe?

Great idea, I was thinking about this on my Icom, but that has a 4? Pin connector.

It'll work just fine.  Just make sure to use the same pin-out on both ends (straight through).  I also use stock Cat-6 cables with a bullet connector sometimes.  I was worried about RF getting into the long cable, but so far I haven't had any problems.

I have an ICOM 5100 with a RJ-45 (8-pin) for the mic and a RJ-11 (with 6-pins) for the control cable.  I've made extension cables for both using connectors found at Home Despot.  Both are straight through.

With Radio Shack in hard times, you might be able to get a good deal on lots of parts at one of the stores they're closing.

If you can find a good deal, get the best crimpers you can find. They are worth their weight in bacon.
