this thing here

Unlicensed and if I read it right dual band. Murs and FRS perhaps???  Encrypted messaging and data. Interfaces with the phones GPS sort of like aprs droid. The webpage is a bit short on details and the FCC has yet to approve it. This prevents me looking at the FCC stuff and confirming it.

Maybe this will work for the SHTF crowd who can't be bothered to get a ham ticket. "I don't want the man in my business" types that have lisence plates on the BOV though. I know a bunch of guys that all have Wouxun radios and are likely bootlegging on 2m simplex the once a year they do comms exersizes. I offer to train them up and I get the Opsec Persec mumbo jumbo.  I point to the front of thier cars and mention that they already have violated that.

Don't know anything about it, but it says FRS right on the front of it. I guess someone will buy it, though.

As for the Opsec/Persec thing, you can't fix paranoid.  I was in the electronic warfare community during my 9 years in the Navy, so I'm pretty sure the government already knows who I am.

Scroll down on the web site to see:

"Notification required by the FCC: This device has not been authorized as required by the FCC.  This Device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.  Any offer for sale is subject to the FCCs Rules and delivery is made contingent upon compliance with applicable equipment authorization and technical requirements."

I can make all sorts of claims about products that are not for sale.

If it meets ALL the requirements for FRS, then it's just another FRS radio.

"I keep a low profile," he says.

Then go to his Facebook page.

"Here's a picture of me stealing the tires off of a police car!"

Vaporware.  Those are big claims from a company that has never anything as far as I can tell.

You can do all those things with off the shelf gear or build your own.

When they started out, they were trying to build a radio that would meet all VHF/UHF radio services. They were originally trying to obtain Part 90 and 95 acceptances. The website not but 6 months ago was marketed towards Part 90/95 and allowed for 97 application.

I had a nice little email discussion about it with the designer.
Great questions.  I have two answers, what we HOPE to do vs what the FCC ALLOWS us to do :)

Out current design is a fixed antenna that would operate on Part 90/95 services and yes would allow it to use repeaters for certain frequencies like GMRS.  The interface today is USB, but we are looking into other options like Bluetooth and wifi.

Thanks,
Chris

I had some questions that Tech Crunch and the FAQ left unanswered.

Going after Part 90/95 services, so would I be correct to assume the antenna will be fixed?

Going after Part 90 services, would the Beartooth be repeater capable (with PL and DPL)?

Is there going to be a different Beartooth for each phone?

How does the the Beartooth interface through the phone? (WiFi, Bluetooth, USB)

Thanks

Here's another few things I've also pointed out on several other forums.

The Beartooth's competitor right now is goTenna (which is in production), a little 2W MURS radio that connects through Bluetooth that sells for $150. It supports data, telemetry, etc. So to even compete, Beartooth would have to be close in price to $150. So that's $150 per phone. Limited phone selection (goTenna works with any bluetooth capable droid or iPhone). The average consumer upgrades their phones every 2 years. Let's assume you are looking for a 5 year service life out of the Beartooth. If you upgrade your phone like a normal person, having to buy a new Beartooth for every phone you upgrade to. That's $450 to get 5 years of service. You can buy a two new Motorola MURS HT's for that price or a TRBO capable SL300 (including the cost of a tech license) and get 10 years of service.

Also, ask any one who uses a radio for work. Antennas get broken because hand helds (even against our best attempts to keep them safe) get abused. You essentially would have to junk your Beartooth if the antenna ever broke off…

So why spend the money?

Another thing to remember. Telemetry can only be used on FRS, MURS, amateur and commercial services. Texting can only go through MURS, amateur or commercial services.

Sounds like you're better off using Serval Mesh on your phone.

Makes me think of "Meet Earl', a crowd-funded outdoor 'tablet' that has exceeded its funding goal by a half million dollars and two years later they have not produced the first unit. They can barely bring themselves to update (string along) their supporters and I'm glad I didn't buy in.
