I was thinking the other day it might be handy to have a HT out with me on the kayak.  Does anyone make an inexpensive one that works?  If not I guess I will stick with a Baofeng in a plastic case.

There are others, that's just the first that came up in a search.

It's funny because they'll say it's waterproof and then say in the details it's not as ass-covering,
but motorola sells the same thing for the same purpose and claims it's mildly submersible.

Cheap enough to find out if it's really waterproof maybe.

$49 on amazon, but quick search suggests it's "rainproof".

A few good used deals on Ebay, how much trouble should I expect from a gently used one?

All used radios are gently used.  I have never seen one advertised as rode hard and put up wet.    YMMV

Tecnet (formerly known as Maxon) TP-8000 series. IP67 rated.

They make one with built in bluetooth. Korean made. If a baofeng is a Tier 1 radio, Tecnet is a Tier 2.

If interested, I can get you a current rep's phone number so you can get some pricing. I seem to remember around $100. He covers most of Texas.

Baofeng BF-A58 is just starting to show up.  It is supposedly rated at IP57.

However, I heard that it needs a different programing cable from other Baofengs

Oh man, that HX370 thread is great. I used to have a small fleet of those on a ship, I handed them out to guys to beat on, they were always wet or frozen, I saw many of them bounce off the deck or swing by the speaker mic cord, and they kept on running. Imagine the samsonite luggage gorillas with radios. Once a bosun dropped one down a stairwell, breaking off the volume control knob. We had spare parts and replacing the pot was about an hours' job.

Anyway, I keep one in my PFD when working on deck. Falling overboard is one of the worst possible accidents at sea, and the ability to call the bridge is huge ("uh, you guys wanna come back and pick me up?") It's my belief that using a speaker mic is important as it allows me to get the antenna well clear of any waves.

If you're kayaking in a place with a Coast Guard presence, I suspect 5 W will get you a response in an emergency.
