Hello fellow hams. Trying to troubleshoot an issue and figured i could get some help from here. I have a 2004 jeep wrangler, i put an ic-7000 in it yesterday. I used a lip mount to the underside of the hood comet mount and a larsen NMO antenna. I also have a terratrak behind the tail light mount for a hamstik HF antenna. Here is the thing. Everything works fine, until i turn on the jeep, then the background noise on 2m and 2m only is like an s7. It stops as soon as i turn it off. Thinking it was ignition noise i got looking into getting some of the ferrite coils. The strange thing is though on HF i have no issues at all no feed back or anything so i am not sure it is the ignition as that should affect HF as well.. I am at a loss here any ideas would be helpful.

Does your vehicle have tpms?

I have no idea about ham radios, but are all your wires shielded? And us the shielding grounded? That would help with interference.

READ THIS WHOLE WEBSITE!!!     http://www.k0bg.com/

Don't know what model you have, but Jeeps are notoriously noisy. the coil on plug packs are some of the worst offending parts.

If it was a shielding/cable problem wouldn't it also affect HF?

Antenna placement. Sounds like the 2M antenna is forward?

I've got a JKU and there's a couple frequencies in 2M I simply can't use, I think due to the ECM.

Yea it's up on the driver side on the hood. Maybe if I move it to the rear....

My XJ is very similar under the hood to you're TJ. I usually can't hear the distributor (yours will be distributor less) but I can generally hear the alternator. I only hear it in urban area repeaters. Not on remote site repeaters.

I had a CA2X4SR mounted on the hood with a Larsen NMO27 mounted on the spare carrier…I had to switch them due to the lack of ground plane on the back. That helped with some of the noise (on a Anytone dual band). The Cobra 25LTD is generally pretty quiet with the Larsen on the hood.

I have a friend with a 75th Anniversary JK. Anytime she tried to key here 7000 on 40m (the only HF band she uses) it would cause the engine to stutter, turn on the change engine light, give an error on the display. She know runs a D*Star dual band and doesn't have any problems with it.

If you've driven the 4.0 all your life, and then you test any of the V6 JK's…first thing you want to do is go drive your 4.0 again. So every day if you prefer the 4.0.

The 75th I speak of, completely stock and it has no balls. It may get 19-21 mpg…but my lifted XJ sure will outrun the thing

The change engine light joke comes from 6.7 Dodges where those who idle them…clog the DPF's every 10-25k miles (and Dodge replaces them as long as they're under warranty).

I own a 98 Grand with 4.0 engine. It's the best vehicle I've owned so far. I had a IC706 in the vehicle for years and never had any significant RF noise problems. It puts out about S2 ignition noise but the noise blanker at low setting takes care of it.  My 2010 Tacoma us another story.  Noise level in the Toyota is at S9+20. The noise is generated by fuel injector circuit. I've tried everything to reduce the noise but failed to improve it so far. Ic7000 noise blanker cuts most of the noise but it really screws up RX performance.

How do you power your rig? Both positive and negative wires should be connected to the battery. Also try installing RF chokes on the power cord at the radio. You can also try replacing spark plugs with new ones with internal resistor. Spark plug wires should also have internal resistance in them (20 kOhms or so). Relocating your antenna to the rear may help too. Try installing  a snap-on RFchoke on the antenna coax to minimize common mode noise.
