Has this been mentioned here yet?  Looks to me like it bluetooths your phone to MURS.

Not useful to me but interesting.

A bandaid for a sucking chest wound.

Its a neat concept but I think the claims are far worse than bubble pack FRS/GMRS radios saying they offer 35 mile range.  There are so many caveats and exceptions that are not mentioned.

The device will do nothing for you if your cell phone is dead.  Its also primarily line of sight.

Agreed.

I should slim down a Baofeng in a pretty package and sell it to hipsters.  i-Ofeng.

Given the change from baofeng to pofung I propose:

I like the concept and can see where it could be useful.

Does APRS work on simplex?  I was thinking of something similar with a Bluetooth TNC and aprsDroid

APRS or packet for that matter is designed to mesh together. A digipeter can run on a simplex radio no problem.

They are far more realistic than what the bubble packs advertise. I've been emailing them back and forth for the last few days asking questions.

Get carried away! That's great. :)

Have you pre-ordered goTenna or are you just considering it?

Ham operator. Just about the only stuff I do pretty regularly on VHF is data/packet. Forgive me all for all of the questions, I just got interested in you're product. Also a big fan RF systems so I can get a little carried away.

For now we are focused on asynchronous data bursts because it makes for a really scalable system where the network will never be clogged.

And regarding an external antenna, you can add one yourself as the FCC has no restrictions on that, but you would void your goTenna warranty. That being said, if you're hacker-inclined it may be worth it for you! :)

Well it's nice to see someone besides Motorola and Ritron producing a full power MURS rig. Is there any thought of adding voice to the mix? Another question, any thought on adding an external antenna port? Lots of potential in that thing for both Part 95D and Part 97 application…

Correct! :) Take a look at our FAQs: http://gotenna.com/pages/faqs. Thanks so much for your interest!

For some reason I thought data on MURS was no bueno, that must have been GMRS.

Yup, yup. Garmin Astro dog tracking collars operate on MURS freq's. And, while not data, Dakota Alert driveway sensors do also.

What I don't get about GoTenna is how do they expect to sell very many of them? The demographic, as far as I can tell, will be limited to people who enjoy hiking/camping/etc. outside of cell coverage in groups and who are totally addicted to texting and/or afraid of bubble pack FRS radios. This seems like a very small market to me. In other words a solution looking for a problem and doomed to failure.
