Anyone here use MT63? It looks like a good digital mode with decent throughput and good error correction. I see that it's used by MARS.  I'd be interested in trying an MT63-1000 QSO tonight if anyone is game.

Some links:

Never used the mode. I'm around now though.

I'm at work on Arfcom between periods of productivity. I won't be at my QTH until later. I should be available after 1900 EST / 0100 ZULU.

Been wanting to try this mode also, just never see it on my waterfall. I logged my first THOR qso a few weeks ago. DM780 recognized the THOR signal, so I clicked on the trace & answered the dude in TX.

Y'all pick a freq & time, I'm game.

All you people and your "work".

Let's try this:

  • Time: 1930 EST on 8/18/14

  • Mode: MT63-1000L (Changed this to Long per the post below.)

  • Frequency: 14.066 MHz +1500. (Updated from my original post.)

If there is QRM or someone else on 14.066, QSY to 14.068.

I'll call CQ ARFCOM. My call is KB3***.

If this time or freq is no good for you please post an alternative.

I'd love to join you guys but I'm not sure I'll be around at 1930. MT63 is one of my all time favorite modes and I have a lot of experience working it. Nobody uses it anymore except MARS, though.

I would strongly recommend you use long interleave. The extensive FEC is the entire point of MT63. A few MT63 pointers for you:

Most important--be patient and wait a full 12 seconds (for long interleave) for decode to start. MT63 is not like other modes. If you fiddle with the tuning knob, thinking that that is the reason you don't have decode, then decode starts over again each time you touch the knob and you'll never get any decode. So just be patient and trust it.

Use looooooooooong CQ calls. MT63-1000L is very, very fast. You need the transmission to go out for at least 30 seconds so that people can tune it, wait the 12 seconds and get some decode. Don't be surprised if you need 20 lines of CQ ARFCOM de WXXX in the buffer!

Even though the documents say you only need to be within 100Hz, don't believe it. Within 50Hz is really where you need to be to get good, reliable decode.

On a 100W rig set your power between 25 and 35W average. You can push a little more but because of the high PAPR on MT63 you start to distort the signal very quickly and then nobody can decode you.

If I don't make it make sure to post an AAR!

I might be able to play.

Thanks. I've changed my suggested settings to MT63-1000L per your suggestion.

I'll try to join in at that time.

I use MT63-2000L all the time on VHF FM nets for RACES in my area.  The nice thing about it, is it's very robust, and you don't even need a proper interface.  As long as the computer's mic can hear the radio, it'll decode it.  And vice-versa with the radio's mic and pc speakers.  Been using it since 2009 or so with FLDigi.  You'll notice a few second delay in the transmission, that's the FEC (forward error correction) making sure it got the data correct.

Never tried the narrower versions on HF, though.

This is your 30 minute warning.

  • Time: 1930 EST on 8/18/14

  • Mode: MT63-1000L

  • Frequency: 14.066 MHz. Let's do 14.066 +1500.

OK, I'm there now. I'll toss out a CQ. N8K## is my call sign.
8/18/2014 3:30:28 PM EDT
[#14]
Calling CQ now.
8/18/2014 3:31:41 PM EDT
[#15]
I called CQ also. Not hearing anyone.

40M might be a better bet.
8/18/2014 3:32:09 PM EDT
[#16]
Not in a position to TX but I have the radio up and running and caught aa777888's CQ with about 90% copy,
and seeing someone else that's 500 Hz low.

Edit: aa777888 is total ghost print as well, you'd literally never know there was a signal there.
8/18/2014 3:33:48 PM EDT
[#17]
Not seeing anybody, 20m may not be best band.
8/18/2014 3:33:49 PM EDT
[#18]
Calling again. If this doesn't work let's QSY to 40M Digital Guard channel. 7112 +1500.
8/18/2014 3:35:30 PM EDT
[#19]
Yes, going to 40M now...
8/18/2014 3:36:53 PM EDT

I heard KC9  in WI. QSY to 40m.

Saw you, and returned your call.  Don't think you saw me.
8/18/2014 3:37:46 PM EDT
[#22]
OK, I'm seeing TXs with lower edges at 14066.5, 14066.625, and 14067.
Frostbite is on 14066.625.

Y'all might want to put your center freq on 14067.5 or your lower edge at 14067, which
will be 14066 on the dial + 1500.

Edit listening 40M 7112 (7113.5 center) now,  I'll mentioned if I see anything but
way early for the band here in AZ.

I just saw WU** on 40M and replied. w00t!

Saw your signal but could not decode you. Very bad conditions on 40M also.

...even earlier for the band here in WA State.
8/18/2014 3:43:28 PM EDT

I saw almost everyone on 20M, it's just you all were on different freqencies by more than 100Hz each. I bet 20M
would work for most.
8/18/2014 3:43:29 PM EDT

Just bits & pieces of some of you guys.

Back on 20m - calling CQ

You're coming in here 599.

I just called CQ and asked for a relay to you. Maybe someone else will drop in.
8/18/2014 3:50:01 PM EDT
[#29]
Suggest we wait until 2030 EDT (0030 UTC) and try this again.
8/18/2014 3:51:32 PM EDT
[#30]
I'll try to check in again then.

In the interim if anyone else is out there, I've QSYed to the 20M Digital Guard channel, 14.0675 +1500 and will call CQ.
8/18/2014 3:51:37 PM EDT
[#31]
99% on your last CQ aa777888. and copied frostbite's CQ's 100% and 50% before that.
8/18/2014 3:58:27 PM EDT
[#32]
I saw Frostbite's call once.

I can actually hear the signal but no decode most times.
8/18/2014 3:58:49 PM EDT
[#33]
No replies heard. Let's reconvene at 2030 EST / 0030 ZULU on 40M Guard. 7112 +1500.

Thanks for trying everyone!

I saw aa777888-2's CQ ARFCOM on 20m guard 100%.
8/18/2014 4:05:10 PM EDT
[#37]
I did mention how this mode is more sensitive to freq. accuracy than others

Everyone might try zero beating their rig against WWV to see how far off they are. Seriously.

I know I'm spot on because Seek2 heard me and he is always spot on

I actually just checked my calibration against WWV and I was about 20Hz off. Well within the MT63 tolerance but I've since corrected that to <5Hz off.

eta...and BigDaddy is also always spot on

Sitting on 40M guard but going away from the radio for a while.
8/18/2014 4:30:34 PM EDT
[#38]
Let's give this a whirl. Calling CQ on 40M Guard.
8/18/2014 4:39:31 PM EDT
[#39]
Not happening, Dave. I can hear your TxID and your training tones, but there's just not enough signal to copy your transmissions.
8/18/2014 4:40:04 PM EDT
[#40]
Got aa777888-2 perfectly although he's not receiving me well. Anyone else want to jump in?
8/18/2014 4:40:55 PM EDT
[#41]
It prints damn fast, doesn't it? I'm a touch typist and even I can't keep up with it! Even with the long latency it's a very fast mode.
8/18/2014 4:43:12 PM EDT
[#42]
Damn fast indeed. If you had stations that could actually hear each other you could exchange a lot of info in a short time.
8/18/2014 4:49:46 PM EDT
[#43]
Copying you OK, NAM. In fact you are strong enough to hear the classic and haunting sounds of MT63. Sort of like an alien flying saucer.
8/18/2014 4:50:12 PM EDT
[#44]
I'm copying aa777888-2 and NAM.

8/18/2014 4:53:33 PM EDT
[#45]
Copy on NAM only here. Probably matching an entire net's worth of words in a single TX.
8/18/2014 4:55:07 PM EDT
[#46]
Trying this one more time for anyone else.
8/18/2014 4:55:44 PM EDT
[#47]
Dave--try running your power up a little higher. I know I've said to be careful with MT63, but since I can't hear you anyway it's worth a try.
8/18/2014 4:58:01 PM EDT
[#48]
was thinking earlier today about MT63 on VHF FM instead of Packet for like minded communications.......
8/18/2014 4:58:16 PM EDT
[#49]
OK, bumped it to 50W (was at 30W). Calling now.
8/18/2014 5:11:39 PM EDT
[#50]
Just had a nice QSO with aa777888. MT63 is a really cool mode and allows you to Tx a lot of info quickly.
