Guys,
I'm looking for a small mobile speaker to add to my truck because my radio isn't loud enough in my center console. Any advise and speaker placement recommendations would be appreciated. I'd like to keep it hidden as much as possible. Thanks!

Good Day,
Is it possible to pipe the audio from the rig directly to the sound system in the truck?

Possible, but its a lot easier to use a speaker. I bought one of these for my 7800 and it works great.

I had trouble hearing the built in speaker in my Yaesu FT-8800, and went with this http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/108.  For about $13, I'm completely satisfied.  It's VERY loud.

I have a couple unamplified CB speakers from the local truck stop. They work good and increase my pills.

Second the MFJ Clear-tone. I have a few kicking around in the shack and in various vehicles. The cord is a little on the short side for vehicle use, just plan on getting an extension.

I have one of those. I just ordered another for the mobile HF rig.

Thanks, guys, for the help! Next I need to figure out where to mount it so it is hidden but heard.

I use a MLS-200 because of the moisture and dust resistance for my Wrangler.  It is an odd duck and needs to be rewired for usage with normal Ham radios.
MLS-200 rewire instructions.  I do like these and plan to buy a couple more and rewire them.  Mono 3.5 plugs are on my Ham swapfest list.

Have you thought about placing it under the seat near the front?

Midland 21406 is relatively inexpensive and readily available online as well as lots of truck stops and such, and sounds pretty good.

I run a Yaesu MLS-100 speaker and have been happy with it.

It is mounted between the driver seat and the center console, on the floor facing up.  In the picture, you can just see it below the coins and the mic.

I mounted my astatic speaker under the steering wheel, pointing up into the gauge cluster area... I hear it just fine. I'll take a picture when I get home tonight.

Back in the day (say 20 years ago or so) Motorola speakers were much beloved by many.  Today they're usually $1 at hamfests.  Tough to beat that.

You can run Motorola speakers on non-moto gear? How? they're powered.

just note that "hidden" is not going to give you the best audio in terms of volume nor intelligibility.  so there is a tradeoff there.
in my Taco i simply pulled the OEM ash tray out, and mounted the speaker (Vertex commercial type) into the recess. works well, and it doesn't look out of place.

Any CB mobile speaker will do for FM VHF/UHF. You may consider buying a better speaker for SSB to improve audio clarity. I once stopped by HRO and tried all of their mobile speakers. Yaesu (Vertex) MLS-100 had the best clarity and plenty of volume for my very noisy Tacoma. I'm very happy with it. I also compared it to several larger CB speakers and a MFJ Cleartone that I use for my other radios. Vertex sounds a whole a lot better.

The MFJ Clear-Tone is one of the few MFJ products I would actually recommend and/or buy more of. I have one in my Jeep sitting on the center console face up under the t-case range lever. I know a few Sheriff's offices that have actually equipped every cruiser with them.

I've never seen a powered Moto speaker…I've seen it in the metal frame (50's-60's) and the plastic (70's-90's). The company that made them for Moto also made them for GE (I've seen them next to a few MASTR II heads and in a few MASTR repeaters). Biggest thing to know about the Moto speakers, 16 O…where the Clear-tone (and most others are 8 O).

On the Moto speaker note remember, you'll let the magic smoke out of a batwing radio if you ground the speaker (-) lead…so keep it floating cause that stuff doesn't go back in.

The powered moto speakers can be very very loud. Like damaging hearing loud in a vehicle. Honestly after running powered and non powered moto speakers, the vertex one is by far better than the moto speakers.

Maratrac's make good repeater transmitters…they'll run without the head and can be programmed without it as well.
