So, I'm jumping up to a mobile radio (likely a Yaesu FT-857D) for my 06 Silverado....
Problem is I do NOT wish to mount my antenna on the roof. I wish to mount it on the pillar behind the driver side extra-cab door. As many of you already the extra-cab door opens "suicide" which wont be a problem (at least clearance-wise). Since the pillar is nearly 90 degrees perpendicular to the ground I'm having difficulty in finding a mount for the antenna. I wish to mount the antenna in this fashion so that the antenna would still maintain gain as well as be more easily accessible in those cases when I need to make a run thru my local automatic carwash (ie remove the antenna just before going thru). Might any ARFcomer have a mount recommendation that would fit the needs of this potential install? Thanks. JB KM4CPJ |

Any Multi-Angle hatchback mount from Diamond or Comet will work for this. It actually mounts to the door lip edge next to the pillar.
I ran one for awhile on my Silverado but I have a 3 door and it was a pain to have to get out and lay back for car washes and drive thrus. |

These are old installation pics, but my Comet CP-5M mount has worked great for the past few years:
Manufacturer link LINK Comet makes an NMO version as well |

You wanting to run a larger antenna for the HF portion that 857d offers or just a little NMO dual bander for 2/440? Yes, I'm interested in the 6m area as well as 2/440. I'm considering the following antennas: Comet SBB14 Comet SBB15 Comet UHV-4 Comet UHV-6 Diamond CR8900A As you can see all these antennas are quite lengthy especially if I were to mount it up top of my truck which already sits at 72" above ground (top of roof)....So that's the main reason I wanted to mount the antenna on the pillar.... Sooooo....I need to figure out the mount first..... |

Are you wanting a clip-on mount like the K400, or a permanent mount?
Take some time and check out BreedLove Mounts and REP Design. The Breedlove ball mount is awesome, but you have to drill some holes. I use one of these to hold a screwdriver antenna to my car and it is SOLID. REP has a lot of different options as well. Make sure you browse through both website's photo galleries and see all the options. You may find a different solution that fits your needs better. |
