I heard a guy calling CQ last night on 20M and I entered his call into QRZ and it wasn't there. The guy said he was from Grenada and I needed it so I answered it back. He came back to me with a 59 and I asked him to confirm his call sign as it wasn't on QRZ, then nothing. QRT. No answer at all after several attempts.

ARRL didn't have it listed. Am I to assume it wasn't a valid callsign?

Sounds like a chickenbander.

Contact these folks to confirm it.

Google it.  If it's legitimate, you will probably get a bunch of hits.

Listings on QRZ.com come from a two places. For US calls the system downloads the FCC call database. For DX there isn't anything this handy. For example Germany has an exclusive arrangement with some call book service and will not release their database to anyone else. Some DX have their ham info scribbled on an index card and filed away somewhere. In every case each DX has spent the time to enter their info manually into QRZ.com. So here and there you will find a call that isn't in the QRZ.com database. Typically a new ham who is busy getting on the air rather than dealing with the administrative details.

However, going QRT abruptly when asked to confirm your call has the BS flag fluttering with pride in the breeze. Possible pirate. I wouldn't bother logging it.

Not all calls are on QRZ.com, especially DX.

Most non US call signs are not entered into QRZ database automatically.  A foreign operator can choose to enter it manually but some don't care.  Same applies to databases in other countries. For example, I had to create an account and manually enter my US call sign and personal information into a database in one of the European countries.

Send him an e-mail, and see if you are in his log.

I had this happen one time with a ham supposedly in Florida.  I KNOW I had the right call sign, as he had given it out to about 10 others before he got to me.  He had spelled it out phonetically and distinctly enough times before.  Yet he was nowhere to be found on QRZ, eHam, or the FCC database.

Does anyone know how to find listings for Japanese hams?  I made a Yokohama contact that I can't find any listings... nor can I find any other Japanese listings.  Suggestions?

This is the site I use for Japanese Ham lookups.  It gives all the details you need if you are going for any of the JRL awards.

My first DX contact was one of those. Never could confirm if it was a real ham or not.

Thank you... I looked up the Japanese contact... not found.  But the prefix he gave does have Yokohama in the middle of it, which he identified as his QTH.  Perhaps I misunderstood the rest of the call?

I will try a few variations on the call sign, see what pops up.
