| Does anyone have one and does it live up to the hype? I am thinking of adding one to a Yaesu 897d for my portable operations (trips to the cabin, hilltop operations, etc) as well as it being my grab and go unit. I had debated on going with a 7200 and 2m in a box but it is a big space and weight penalty for the better DSP. If the BHI is as good as the hype it might be a better option for me. |

Your radio already has a DSP installed. I doubt BHI will do better. Why do you think you need an additional DSP?
IC-7200 has an IF DSP which is theoretically more powerful in a contest environment. I've listened and compared my FT857 (basically same radio as yours) to a friend's IC-7200. The Yaesu has better audio quality for my ears and it does 10 times better in a CW contest with an optional 300Hz filter. IC-7200 DSP CW filters were useless during 2013 Field Day. It was "ringing" so bad that it was impossible to copy CW while it was crystal clear on the FT-857. Do you always have IPO turned on while operating on the lower bands (160-17m) ? Do you use RX Gain to improve reception on a crowded band? Do you know how to use IF Shift to improve reception? |
| I bought a Yaesu FT-817 that it had it installed. It worked really well at removing atmospheric noise when listening to SSB stuff, made listening to ragchews and stuff more pleasant. For the occasional contact or whatever I don't think it would be worth the cost though. Just my opinion... |

I do mostly SSB and no CW. Even with the on board options the 897 gets a little muddy on audio when trying to clean up the noise with weaker signals. I have seen demos of the BHI and it seems to do a pretty good job so just wanted to get some opinions on it.
Edit: here is a demo of it on the 897 http://youtu.be/YFyWWs_S5LQ |

Yes, I added a BHI 1061 DSP to an 897 myself. It was a huge improvement. Would you like mp3 sound samples, DSP on/off?
IM me with your email address. ON THE OTHER HAND... the West Mountain Radio Clear Speaker sounds exactly the same, the same four levels of DSP as the BHI 1061. All you need to do is supply it with 12 volts. It would cost about the same amount, and be much easier than going into the radio. The larger amplified speaker of the CLR-SPKR sounds better, too. http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/speakers/4964.html Overall, I think you are far better off with the IC-7200 and a separate 2m rig. |
