I'm a newb, that's been out of ham world for about 10 years.

Starting to get back in it. My knowledge is that of an outsider now, but I'm wanting to advance to at least a general license. What's the best source of study to prepare me for the test? And will the test also include questions for Tech license? Not planning in accomplishing this overnight, but do want to accomplish my goal. I would appreciate any and all input to help out a fellow ham

I would do some research on eham. If you don't mind paying a small amount Gordon West radio school is good. You Tube also has a lot of good videos and they are free.

Ham Test Online............

Breezed thru the General Upgrade after using.....currently subscribed for the Extra Upgrade, but spending too much time foing everything else to study..........

there are free on-line study guides that some use; I did not, I paid for above service and was well rewarded-YMMV

Good Luck!

It's not just the test questions, there are study materials and links to more study materials as well.  I'm using this and sitting for my Tech and General on the 18th.

No need to pay anything for study guides.  Here's a link to some free ones:  http://www.kb6nu.com/tech-manual/.

After reading through the Technician study guide and taking free practice exams at various websites, I consistently scored 30+ out of 35.  Took me about a week.  I then followed the same process for General.  However, I did not study as much and only consistently scored around 27/35 (still a passing score).

Took and passed both tests last weekend with scores about one point better than I had achieved on the sample exams.  There were no surprises on exam day.

Hamtestonline is awesome.  Well worth the money if you want to pass the exams quickly.

For my Tech and General, I took a class with a local Ham club.  For Extra, I studied on my own, but knowing I didn't have time to do so at home, I bought the Gordon West CD's to play on my 1.5 - 2 hour round trip commute.  Worked great, and an effective use of otherwise wasted time.

I used this book and the practice tests on eham to pass the General exam

I did the practice tests on qrz.com.  Walked into the VE session without a license, walked out with a general on the way.  A little more time spent on preparing and I likely would have an extra.

Qrz.com practice tests work just fine. I also used the Gordon West book to help w/ some things. He has some tips in there that can come in handy.

+1 on Ham test online, used it for General and Extra, worth the few buckeroonies.  I am now a VE.  FYI, you have to pass Technician before you can take the General test, but you can do it in one session for one fee.  Last session I did, had a guy go from no license to Extra for his $15 fee.  Missed one question out of 120 and that was on the General test.

Wow.  That is either being lucky, or well prepared.  I gave the extra test a shot, but wasn't really expecting anything spectacular.  I did ace the tech and do a decent job on the general, though.  Gotta love the VE's that encourage folks to get their money's worth out of a test session.

When our radio club was teaching AR courses, we used the ARRL manuals.
General License Manual: http://www.arrl.org/shop/ARRL-General-Class-License-Manual-7th-Edition/

More practice exams can be found here: http://www.qrz.com/hamtest/

I did self study all the way to Extra. The above study guides and the QRZ.com practice tests got me through General. The Gordon West study guide is better for Extra.

Used the ARRL manuals for Tech & General.  Used the Gordon West book for Extra.

Then, for General & Extra, used Ham Test Onilne, aka http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/ to do questions for the more difficult/numerous General & Extra exam pool questions.  The adaptive aspect of the software, re-showing/reviewing the questions you got wrong, helps cement them in your brain.  I got to the point where the right answer just jumped off the screen, & found that happened as well when I sat for my exam this past Monday.

Sat down for General & Extra exams, & Hulk-smashed them both ..  waiting for my Extra to show up on the ULS, so i can .

Followed the recs of those on here who said Ham Test Online.  They were right.  Great success.
