I was l listening to a few folks this afternoon talk about going by their local Goodwill stores every week or so and buying up all the routers they could get for about $15 per and converting them to this.
Anyone ever tried it? Is it anything really useful or just a fun thing to mess around with? http://www.hsmm-mesh.org/just-starting-read-this.html |

Our last radio club meeting there was a presenation and demonstration. I will offer up my QTH to add into the system but don't really have any need to be the spear point of it... If they want to do it thats cool, but I don't really care to spend much money on it myself. I have wifi at home and work and really don't need it or care to use it elsewhere.... Though if the grid goes down and one node still has access it gives them all access... It does take some filtering to stay part 97 compliant though... That meens things like shopping are blocked. Gota be carefull though with amps and yagi dishes though at those freq levels... talking about blindness with only a small 10w amp, because the gear has so much gain. First thing I thought of when during the demo, was serious power behind this and it would make a pretty serious weapon. |

If you're in Austin these guys are here in town. Haven't looked at it yet myself but as I understand it they find Linksys WRT54G routers and flash on firmware. They get used in all sorts of places. I've been approached to see about putting one on a quad copter to increase its horizon; I recommended fixed wing or balloon for more time on station. Quoted:

They did mention Linksys routers. And even attaching directional antennas and usb ports to accept flash drives. Before that conversation the scan stopped on the Georgetown ISD school bus dispatch. "100 to 56." "56." "56 be advised I have a report that a kid is hanging out of a window by his hands on your bus." "10-4."
