I have this pretty new radio that comes with a programming cable complete with Comm port (serial adapter). What, if any, packet options will work with this? It's been a while so humor me.

Also, I have a Kenwood TH-D7, I'm thinking this cable may be a direct plug in for that but probably useless for what I want for the Baofeng.

The programming cable is just that, for programming the radio.  Not for data (packet).

It is compatible with Kenwood HT's that have the same 2-pin arrangement (one 3.5 mm stereo, one 2.5 mm stereo).

Throw away any CDs you got with the cable.  Don't use Baofeng software.  Instead find and download CHIRP.  Use the "Daily Build".

There, get the installer exe.

Then go back to the UV-5R information thread and start at the beginning.

It should also be mentioned that most of those programming cables have a counterfeit Prolific chip in them.  You will have to download a specific driver for it.  The up to date drivers won't work.

Already been there.

What I'm trying to do is "different." My guess is the programming cable with work with my D7 just like the serial cable and USB adapter works now. I completely understand the UV-5r doesn't have a TNC in it like the D7 does, however the programming cable makes the same attachments as an audio cable. Without audio through USB serial I guess it isnt' going anywhere. :P
