So should I start studying? It can't be that hard, right?

Anyone have their license, and have some good free online resources?

I earned a 2nd class ticket back in the day, I don't believe the GROL carries a lot of weight, though, I'd like to be shown wrong. 73, Rob

Are you close to where they give the test?

I am working on mine. For me it's just one more thing to list as external training in my fitness report. And who knows maybe one day it will come in handy.

I have a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.   All that means, is that I filled out the application form, and sent it in.

I had to have it to fly planes for a living, though.

No clue, but after having my Extra for a year and a half now, I kind of miss studying. I figure any knowledge is good knowledge.

I finally got my GROL about 2 years ago.  Used a book by Gordon West as a study guide.  A quick search of online study resources led to

Good luck!

I got mine in 95. Just a pool to study. Very similar breakdown as Ham. Rules regs section theory section etc. Wasn't difficult at all

GROL doesn't mean as much as it use to employers anymore if that's what you mean. A lot of emphasis is being placed on getting the ETA Associate/Journeyman CET certification now.

It still does here.  At least 3 or 4 job postings per year come into the college specifically requiring a GROL.  They are all from railroads or utility companies and the pay is pretty good for a kid graduating with a two-year degree.  There isn't one employer in the area that requires or gives a pay increase for ETA, ISCET, or NARTE certifications.

That looks like the book that I used.  Check the FCC website to confirm that the question pool in the book is still current.

That is cool!

I was going to ask what requires a GROL these days? I guess that answered that. I got mine (2nd Class RT) back in the day when you needed it to work on anything but ham radios. They did away with the requirement two years after I passed.

I have one too though I do not believe they are needed any more.  Back when I was in college in the 1980's I was thinking of joining the college radio station and they were required to talk on a licensed station (everyone attending the orientation meeting was given an FCC application).  I never did get on the air so never used it.

As for the GROL, a neighbor got it as it was a requirement of his firm in order to work on land-mobile equipment in his company.  An old friend of my father had a 1st class radiotelephone license as he was a transmitter tech at television station.  They were heavily regulated back then (more so than today).

My dad has his first class. Back in the late 70's it made him a busy guy. I just want to keep learning, knowledge is and always will be power.
