Thought someone might want to try this.

PLAY ON PROPNET WEEKEND - POP AUGUST 31 0000 UTC TO SEPTEMBER 2 2359 UTC

The PropNET Group was formed in the early 2000's to provide real-time propagation reporting on amateur radio bands other than 2-Meters. First called Beaconet,it changed its name to PropNET and the operating mode to USB PSK31 +1500 Hz.

Since becoming PropNET,the group has been highly active on 10,30,and 6-Meters. At times other amateur radio bands, including 2-Meters have had activity. PNP operators use Windows-based designed software for communications, capture and telnet to post and update real-time propagation maps and build a database. Link: http://propnet.org/index3rp.shtml

During this weekend,PropNET members throughout North America will be active on 144.288 MHz PSK31 USB. Most will send a timed 35-40 second beacon (about 6-10 times per hour). The format of a PNP transmission will look like: PropNET.org ROBOT ACTIVE! CALL ME +/-200Hz My Call X 1 de Ur Call X 2 KA5DWI>vk:[em12ju]PHG415265/^F25F

Answer any time after a PNP transmission with the PNP call once and your call twice. The Robot may reply with a QSO number. As long as your call is copied twice,it could be captured (from a ham radio database) and placed on the Real Time Propagation Quality Circuit Report.

Example from 10-Meters on 0105 UTC August 28: Link: http://swotrc.net/pop.png

This outdoes many of the other services. It is real-time,point to point.

If you get a chance, join in. Several articles about PropNET have been published in QST,CQ and Popular Communications. Also papers from collected data have been published in the proceedings of the Central States VHF Conference and an active Blog about current propagation conditions is updated on a regular basis.

Sorry is the links don't work, I am using my phone to post this.

POP -- Play On PropNET Labor Day weekend: 0000z Saturday through 2359z Monday

PropNET is what you get when you cross-polinate a beacon with a receiver with a robot with a PSK31 station. It has been active on 10 meters (http://propnet.org/catch3.php? band=HY¢er=US&last=24& call=&maptype=G2&geo=&zoom=1) for the past decade; now it is coming to 2 meters for the weekend (http://propnet.org/catch3.php? band=VK&last=24&call=¢er=US)

Visit http://www.PropNET.org Download the free software Tune your radio to 144.288 MHz USB (this system uses common PSK31!) Configure the software for your station Run 1/2 max power and check your heat sink for the first hour as a simple precaution (PSK31 is a data mode, after all)

If your signal is decoded by another PropNET participant, the link path will display on a web map found here: http://propnet.org/catch3.php? band=VK&last=24&call=¢er=US

If you see such a link, you can use the built-in keyboard QSO system to call the other PropNET station.

If it decodes its own call sign once and your callsign twice, it will respond on-the-air! You'll receive a transmission along with a "QSO number" to confirm success.

As you can see from the map, there are already a few stations starting to get ready for this weekend!

Keep an eye on the map. If you see someone "nearby", rotate your antenna to see if you can link!

It's OK to use verticals, too. Just keep in mind that there will be a performance hit because of cross-polarization at play.

Have fun!

Don't know anything about digital modes.

Does one need a transceiver intended for use with that mode or can one interface their HT/mobile with their computer to do it?  Is an external/intermediary device needed or can it be cabled directly from the radio to the PC?

Typical 2m HT or mobile rig is FM only.

This will require a 2m rig that operates single side band.

Yes some type of hardware interface will be required between the rig and PC.
