Been working on getting an attic dipole. Finally found a working length for 10 meter that my radio will actually tune and has low SWR.
I've been trying to find some traffic on any 10 meter mode, no luck. Anyone want to do a broadcast and let me know if I'm working? Located in NW Arkansas. Shoot me a PM and we can test this sucker out. |
| 10m is almost as cruel a mistress as its little friend 6m. When the band is open, I've talked around the world on 5w CW. When the band is dead, legal limit might not even make it one skip. All I have to say is that I am glad I have my DXCC on 10m because if I was starting today, I don't know that I would make it before the peak of the next solar cycle. We should have some improved conditions come fall time. Until then just check it daily and you'll happen on someone when you least expect it. |

I'm convinced that putting 10m phone on the Tech license was the crack dealer approach to getting more Generals. When it opens up, a tech will get just a taste of how sweet it can be, and then the free supply dries up.
Bastages. Oh well, it made me get my general! LOL |

I think the big difference between when I was first licensed in 1991 and now is that we rely too heavily on the DX spotters. Too many of us are not taking the time to call CQ and generate some activity.
We sit around and moan about how nothing is being spotted when we should be calling CQ. The only time I ever hear any serious activity is during a contest. On a band like 10m, calling CQ will net more contacts than waiting for something to pop up on the cluster. |

Bingo, It always helps to call CQ a few times 28.400 is where I usually listen for SSB calling Quoted:

If everyone sits around listening, no one knows that the band is open. Bingo, It always helps to call CQ a few times 28.400 is where I usually listen for SSB calling I suspect that's one reason why the digital modes are sometimes more active than voice... it's easy to hit the enter key to send a CQ, and hit it again in 5 or 10 minutes. Not many people have voice keyers set up to be able to do that, and it gets really old calling CQ on voice on a dead band. |

I remember working a lot of stations back in the late 80's on 10 Lately it has been pretty dead. The late 80's were the best. I used to go home for lunch in Dayton Ohio and would talk with a British chap EVERY DAY at lunch time for weeks on end. He was having dinner while i ate lunch. It was ridiculous easy to make contacts. I got WAS on 10m in one summer on a magnet wire dipole in a townhouse. |

Calling CQ got a reply from a Spanish station who nearly pegged the meter (well, the blinking lights) and sounded like he was down the street. He gave me an S9+20 with my 25w. |
