Need some help figuring out how to add a power/SWR meter in my shack.  I want to add it and still be able to use my patch panel in the most efficient manner.

Here's some pics of my set up now.

Use the two of the "spare" connections on the patch panel as tuner in and tuner out. You would patch whichever transciever you are using to "tuner in" and the "tuner out" patch to whichever antenna you want to use.
ETA- This would mean hooking the PWR meter and tuner together as "one unit".

Here's an idea depending on what you want to do.  Hope this twisted formatting works.

IC-7200----->
..............
...............| New AB SW |----->Tuner----->SWR Meter-----?Patch Panel
............../
IC-703+----->

or

IC-7200----->
.............
................|New AB SW|----->SWR Meter----->Tuner----->Patch Panel
............../
IC-703+----->

ETA:  It mangled my formatting but you get the idea.

Personally I'd get a second meter.

One for each rig

This was my initial thought of how to do it also, KB7DX.  I not sure what you mean by "hooking the PWR meter and tuner together as "one unit".

Thanks for the other ideas too, KCC and Mr. Harry.  I don't have the meter yet, but it won't be too long.    ETA:  I just saw your May 2013 thread about this subject Mr. Harry.

What I meant was if the tuner and power meter are separate units, you would hook the output of the tuner to the input of the power meter and consider it one unit. The input of the tuner would go to one of the "spare" inputs on the patch panel and the output of the power meter to the other "spare".

DX, might ought the meter and tuner positions be flipped

If you like. It can go either way and I suppose with BD's setup it should be reversed. You could use the SWR meter in the rig too.
I like a power meter coupled directly to the antenna and have always had just a plain, albeit large, PO meter as a final output to the antenna. I guess it all stems from running amps back in the day.

Yup, KB7DX got it in one. That's exactly how I'd do it as well.

BigDaddy, I like the way you think!  You do it right the first time and only take the SMART short cuts!

I like this. Only down side I see is not being able to use the meter without using the tuner. But like said above 2 meters would be best.

Thanks for the kind words, hobbyist and gcw.

The tuner can be bypassed, if needed.

Being able to bounce ideas off the members on this group sure makes making decisions a lot easier.
Also, like some of the rest of us here, I'm a tad bit anal when it comes to this stuff!  I copied a photo of the meter in question (Daiwa CN-801HP) and made sure the dimensions were as close as possible to the real meter.  That way, I can get a feel for how it'll look and fit in my setup.  The pic is taped to an AGM battery I had handy for effect.

Another thing I learned:

With the tuner not setting almost on top of the radio, the 7200-to-tuner cable is not long enough to do what I need.  So, I found  a solution on the web.

C2G / Cables to Go - 29613 - 6ft Ultima PS/2 M/F Keyboard Extension Cable

This cable matches the 6-pin mini din connectors on the short cable supplied with the IT-100 tuner.  6-pin mini din Male to 6-pin mini din Female easily extends it to the length I need for this project.

That's an Autek RF-1 antenna analyzer on top of the patch panel.  It's performed great even though the reviews on Eham are mediocre.  Two thumbs up in my experience!

Regarding what the IT-100 will tune, it's tuned whatever I've thrown at it, so far.  I don't recall how big a mis-match it'll fix. (or fool your radio into thinking it's matched).

Of course once you noticed how good the prices are on toslink cables, and maybe you should few spare [insert cable type] just in case...
So much for the savings.

You could install a 2-way RF antenna switch between both radios and the patch panel. A single coax line will connect the switch and the patch cable. Connect your tuner and SWR meters into the single line between the 2-way switch and the patch cable.

Generally, the LDG tuners will tune up to 10:1 SWR down to acceptable levels (below 1.7:1).
