Was sent this recently from one of the contesting boards...   thought I would share it here

In short, there is an aging ham who cant operate anymore, but is checking the mail daily for QSL cards.   As reported, getting a card in the mail is the highlight of his day....  see the cut and paste note below.

Hello,

Some of you may recognize the call sign N4Xx    Vic has
been a prominent person in early contesting and DXing.

I recently received the email below from Vic's daughter Bxx.

It's tough to have been so active and communitcated over many years with
friends around the world and suddenly be shut off.

Take a look at your logs. If you have every had a QSO with N4Xx
maybe you could confirm again that QSO and have Vic a reason to "check the
mail " again.

Sooner or later we will all get old and maybe also looking for that old
spark of a distant QSO.

The nurse at Victor's home has informed me that he hangs out when the mail
comes in every day to see if he gets any.  He doesn't.

If you all could occasionally drop him a postcard or something, it would be
great.  Keep in mind he probably doesn't know who you are, sad to say, he
just likes to get mail with his name on it.  (He used to read every morsel
of junk mail he received, although he didn't know what it was.  But since we
moved, that source has dried up.)

Thanks for the help!

Love,
Bxxx

If you worked him, please consider confirming again...  if not, would be nice just to send him a nice note on the back of your QSL card...

Thanks for looking !

It'd be my pleasure and honor to send him a note.  Thanks, Mndless.

Thanks BD..  It sounds like he loved ham radio in his day, and still  loves getting cards...     I have ageing family members, and even though this is a normal part of life, it is sad to witness this phase of life, at times.

I plan to shoot him a card once a month or so...   happy to do it....  don't know anything about this gentleman, but still easy enough on my end...

He'll soon be getting one with a nice beach scene.

I'm going to stick one in the mail tomorrow. I've never worked him. But I don't really think that matters.

Had my assistant print me a stack of envelopes this morning...   going to send him a note every few weeks or so...   Got so many QSL cards laying around - might as well put them to good use....

Missed this thread. Will mail him a QSL card tomorrow. I assume his QRZ address is correct.

Anybody that lives near this old guy should go see him and bring a portable rig.  Sit in a park or whatever, work the bands.

If we can find a ham to do that, would anyone want to chip in for gas and beer money?

I'd do it but y'all can't afford my gas money.  I'll kick down a few bucks, though, to anyone else who is closer.

ETA:  you can't afford my beer money either.

The address on the post at contesting.com is different from QRZ, and I would assume current..

That would be correct...

Ok. A search on Contesting.com brought up the article with a different address in TN.  I wrote a note on my QSL card congratulating him on  the YCCC Hall of Fame nomination.
Hope this brightens his day a little.
