Recently bought a used yaesu vx8 dr with the additional GPS antenna.  Been fiddling around with it and finally got the settings where they needed to be in order to find myself on aprs.fi

Neat tech.
Anyone have any tips or tricks worth sharing?

Set your beacon interval to 1 min....   30secs pushing it.  If you set it to 15 secs, you'll crowd the network with too many beacons (the WX stations already crowd it by too many beacons in a short period of time).  I actually filtered out the WX stations.

I have 5 different preset Beacon messages.  One of them is for emergency only.  (i.e. "SOS SOS SOS Send help at my location!")  The rest I have set to the different freqs I'm monitoring.

I'm set to 3 minute intervals...while its cool and, all it's neat to see me jumping between digipeaters in an as the crow flies fashion...
Not to mention the additional info available to fellow hams regarding speed heading and messages while n the moe

It blew my mind to find out just how many HAMs were nearby. It is cool tech.

1 minute is too often except in some exceptional circumstances.  2 or 3 is more reasonable for general use.  Or use a smart beaconing setup with something like 1 minute minimum, and 3 or 4 minutes maximum.

I concur. Smart beaconing is the best way so you're not tying things up if you're sitting still. Otherwise 2-3 min is more than sufficient.
