I have had this vx8 for about two years now and this issue has me baffled. It will run fine off of 12v using the car adapter and It will charge and power on using the wall charger. It will not turn on via battery power. It shows that It is charging the battery and after a time show a fully charged battery. I have 8.5v at the battery pack contacts that touch the terminals on the radio. I tried the alkaline pack with fresh batteries and measured about 5.4v at the contacts. If I check the battery contacts on the radio it shows nearly 12v when plugged into dc power. I tried a full reset of the radio and that did not help.
I called Yaseu for tech support last Friday and was basically told that i do not know what I am doing and that with 5v on the alkaline pack it was too low of voltage and it will not turn on with that low of voltage. I asked how can three 1.5v batteries put out more than 5v? The "tech" told me that it was a bad battery and send it into them to look at it.
Any suggestions? |

If you have 8.5v at the back of the pack, thats more than enough to fire up the radio. I just popped the battery off my VX-8 and had 8.22v and its working fine. Might have to pull the case off and check inside. If you need help pulling it apart just sent me an IM. I think I remember how the VX-8 comes apart. |
| I would presume there is a third battery contact, virtually every battery anymore has them. It's used to monitor the battery state and acts as protection also. If it's not making contact, or is giving the radio an indication that there is something wrong with the battery the device may not turn on. In some cases it's just a matter of the protection/monitoring circuit failing. I have some camera batteries that this has happened to... the batteries charge, and work perfectly in a camera that does not check the protection circuit, but the camera that does check the circuit refuses to power on. |

I had a similar issue with my VX-8R... the battery was making poor contact with the radio.
After examining it, I realized that wearing the belt clip will put pressure on the tabs that secure the battery to the radio. The little plastic bars above the tabs broke off and it doesn't hold tight anymore. Do you still have plastic bars above the locking tabs on the battery? |

I do not believe it is the battery pack. I take and try the alkaline pack and it will not power up with that either. |

If you power the radio under external power will it remain powered if the external power is removed (ie just the battery)? Nope. I have been looking at the circuit diagrams for the radio and have it narrowed down to two possible parts. I am debating on replacing both or just sending it in and selling after I get it back. Yaesu support may have ended me purchasing any more of their products due to their attitude. |
