So I've got the radio and the programming cable and I've got Baofeng's software installed. I can install Chirp, too if that's better but I really don't know what I'm doing. The computer appears to be talking to the radio and I loaded several frequencies from a list of local repeaters into the radio. I really need someone to hold my hand and walk me through everything or point me to a YouTube video because I'm pretty lost. Thank you for looking.

ETA: To make my question(s) more specific, I guess I mainly want to know what the header for each column means. The "+" or "-" next to the repeater frequency is the offset, right? I just add or subtract 0.6 Mhz to the listed frequency? Once the radio is loaded, how do I select a frequency to listen to or scan the stored frequencies?

ETA2: I think I got most of this figured out. Enough to keep me busy fiddling around with the radio until I get my license. Thanks for the help, guys.

with chirp you can query repeater book and just copy and paste all the info you need

Thanks. And thanks for the IM. I DLed CHIRP but it's not talking to the radio. I haven't tried to fix the issue but it's also not really supposed to support the B6.

as long as it is the daily build it should download if you select B5 as the radio

Where do I get the daily build? I DLed the .exe from here for Windows. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, if it matters.

Yes.

I just add or subtract 0.6 Mhz to the listed frequency?

Yes, the repeater listed frequency should go in your RX column, the frequency plus or minus .6MHz (or 5MHz for 440) goes in the TX column.

Once the radio is loaded, how do I select a frequency to listen to or scan the stored frequencies?

Press the VM button to change to memory mode, use the up and down arrows to go through the list of stored channels.

Thanks. I got several repeaters stored and I listened to commercial radio and NOAA but I didn't catch anything on a repeater yet. I tried to scan through the stored frequencies according to the instructions in the manual but it didn't look like it was doing anything.

I had trouble with CHIRP and my B5.  I loaded the same repeaters as my 5R, and while the 5R would pick them up, I'd hear nothing on the B5.  Simplex and NOAA came in fine, though.  Loaded the B5 software, put in the same repeters, and everything worked fine.  This was with the latest CHIRP daily build.

Just FYI

Interdasting. I got CHIRP working but I haven't heard anything on the amateur frequencies yet. I don't even take my test until Monday so I can't transmit to get a radio check.

If someone lives in the Phoneix area and you're willing to transmit for me, that would be cool.

Try manually entering the repeaters in the stock Baofeng software (only upload to radio, don't download the settings that may not be working) and scanning the repeaters during known busy times.  Locally, there are nightly nets and the repeaters are busy during weekday commute times.

Found this on the Google: http://wb7tjd.org/wiki/Club_Nets

Try listening in during one of the nets to see if the different software fixed your problem.

I think the B6 and 5R are similar enough this might work.

These are flow charts for manually programming repeaters in the UV-5R.  This is new as of today.

Right click and save as.

Nice. Thank you. Several of the buttons are different on the B6 but the logical order should be similar enough to work.
