I have been wondering if it is possible to build a switch box with say 3 switches. Normally that would require at least 4 wires. But what about using a pi or arduino to read the resistance on a line.

This way each switch has a resistor of different value. Switch 1 has a 10 ohm, 2 has 100 ohm, and 3 has 2k ohm. This way based on the resistance the arduino knows what switches are tripped.

Im sure I'm not the first to think of this but I don't know what its called so its hard to find any info and thought this would be the place to ask.
