Buying a mint condition Ten Tec omni VII tomorrow.  Wife would not approve, budget does not compute, but I just can't take it anymore. I really want it against all reason. Wish me luck or talk me out of it.

Need to know the details. How much is it?

BTW buying "stuff" the wife doesn't approve of isn't on my to do list.

This is a superior rig for basic SSB, CW and to an extent RTTY. I had too many problems dealing with narrowing the pass band for digital modes when the center of the pass band kept moving. The Kenwood TS-590s would be a better rig for all the bells and whistles and all around use. The Ten Tec is very good at what it does, it just isn't well designed for digital modes because of the changing center of the band pass. The TS-590 is no slouch, the design of the Omni VII is hardware limited (old). The Omni VII internal tuner, LDG  design,  is superior to about any internal tuner. BTW I highly recommend the use of outboard tuners, they are more robust, efficient and have a wider matching range.

I don't do digital modes( new general) so just getting my feet wet w/ HF.  Found this unit for $1750 and it is truly like new.  I think it will be a good rig for a long while.

Your choice of course, it is a good rig, just not for me. The Kenwood would have a 1 year warranty, the Ten Tec is probably past any infant mortality issues. Enjoy!

I think that is a lot of radio for a new general just getting his feet wet.

On the other hand, I can't imagine that you would loose money if you sold it because you didn't like it.

So, what happened?
Did you buy it?
Is the 'Big D' thread in GD?
Am sure your wife knows you could be doing a lot worse things than fiddling with and tweaking a radio.
Let her buy something she has her eyes-heart on, call it even?

Not an Omni, but I do have a Jupiter.  I really like it.  Some really good filtering, DSP, other features, yet not difficult to operate.  The menus are "set once and forget".

Just a very good rig.  I'm sure you'll enjoy the Omni.

I did a bit of reading on the OMNI while I was in a pileup with South Sudan earlier. It's a cool rig, but it doesn't have 6m... WHAT THE FUCK.

The Omni VII has 6M, the previous Omni rigs did not. The antenna tuner does not work on 6M on the Omni VII though BTW. 73, Rob

Had a discussion with wifey about the Omni again.  I got the "buy it if you want but we could really use that money for the kids tuition" talk.  She is right and I felt like a doosh.  Im self employed and decided to wait till a juicy job comes through and I'll buy the radio then... if it is still available.

Probably the right decision.  In my experience, when the time is right, things seems to fall right into place.

A good set of noise cancelling headphones can usually keep you from hearing the kids crying because they're hungry...Just Kidding!

Sucks being a grown up sometimes.  There'll be other opportunities.

The last couple of replies were spot on.
I get the 'urge' out of my system, then a good deal finds me.
Guns, Guitars, and, Radio can be an very $$$ hobby!
Was nice of your wife to give you an option, instead of a flat out whatever it is women can say!
