It was supposed to be sunny and 42 today.  Instead, it is 28 and snowing.  Not the best day to go to the scrapyard.  I need a mast for my 2 meter / 70 cm. antenna, though.  So, I decided to brave the elements and get over there.  I'm sure glad I did.  I saw one of those paid junk hauler's trucks unloading.  I was hoping they might have a piece of pipe that would fit my purpose.  I did far better than that.  As I was watching them throw stuff out the back of the truck, I noticed a box leaning against the side of the truck with the words Hy-Gain on the side.  I had to check it out.  My initial impression was that it was parts to an antenna.  I asked about it.  They said they didn't know what was in it but I could have it if I wanted it.  Did I ever!!  A quick visit to the scale and $7 (yes, you read that right...$7) later I was loading it in my truck.  I got it home; and, carefully opened the side of the box.  It is a NEW IN THE BOX Hy-Gain V-6R.  You can see the catalog from Ham Radio Outlet and the original invoice in the second photo.  The guys on the truck said they got it from some guy that used to build up radios but got away from it.  I almost cried as I watched them throw a Heathkit radio, a couple of Kenwoods, and some Yaesus onto the junk pile.  They had ripped off the faceplates, cut coaxs and power cords and generally trashed them.  At least I saved this antenna from an ignominious end.  Now, I can try out a new band once I get it put up.  It won't be today, though.  I'm not climbing on any ladders in the snow.

This is what I saw leaning against the truck.

This is what I found when I got the box open.  All the parts are still in paper / plastic with the manual and invoice (visible near the middle of the box).

Outstanding!!

I admit, I shed a tear when I read about the trashed radios.

I love finding old radios.

Umm... Wouldn't that be 50% profit? Or am I missing a joke here?

50% would be $10.50.
