I'm finally about to take the plunge into HF with a gently used mint Ten Tec Omni VII. After much research and waffling I just kept going back to the Omni. It gets great reviews. 1 of the things that has drawn me to the Omni is its reputation for having a no nonsense menu configuration (ease of use). It is WAAY more radio than I'll ever use but buying an Icom 718 as a starter radio would inevitably lead to me wanting to upgrade. Buy once cry once right? I could never afford a new Ten Tec Omni VII, I can't even really afford 1 used but I'm in! I know I'll need a power supply, it comes with an internal tuner. I plan on using a loop antenna on my property. Any suggestions on a power supply etc would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a Ten-Tec Jupiter, and think you'll be very happy with the Omni. I've never talked to anyone with a Ten-Tec that didn't love it.
I have a Samlex SEC-1223 and a SEC-1235M. The 1235 is the same size as the 1223 but has the meters sticking out a little on front. You might want to go with the 1235 to have a little extra current for accessories. |

I ran an Astron switcher supply with mine, no problems at all. The Omni VII has very good basic controls, and receiver BTW. A clean TX, that can be opened up for better sounding SSB. I had the 500 Hz CW filter in mine too, almost a necessity for serious CW work. A rig with a very good reputation, it just didn't "click" with me and I sold mine and got an Elecraft KX3. 73, Rob |

I really like Astron linear power supplies. They are relatively cheap on the used market. Most guys swear by the new switching supplies, however I, as a low band DXer really worry er. Obsess about noises. Switchers all generate RF most will do so out of the armature bands some will do it within bands though.
Any 12v supply with 20amps will get you on the air. I use an Astron 35 amp with dual meters. |

I guess I'm old school, because I also wanted a linear power supply. I went with the Alinco DM-340MVT, and so far, like it a lot. It's dead quiet.
Oh, and congrats on the new rig.
