So my dad and I got our tech (just got FCC letter today) and plan on trying for general in April.  In the mean time, looking for some cheap ht's to play with.  The uv5r has good reviews here and other places, question is, which uv5r, uv5r+, uv5ra, etc?

So I do know that if we get the uv5r, I need a new antennae and the programming cable and extended battery pack.  The question about the programming cable is, is that something I can do?  As of right now I have no clue what programming a radio would be like or what im programming it for.

Use of these radios will mostly be local/hunting, and when more experienced getting a decent mobile setup.

Alos , should I purchase from amazon or is there an ARF approved vender?

I'm a noob with this stuff so thank you in advance.

My son and I have the UV-5R Radios

He programmed them using only the radio I used the cable and software.

So take your pick, The software just makes it easier.

The plain old 5r can do the xtra battery with no mods!

Get CHIRP to program the hts.

If you can fill out a spreadsheet like MS Excel, you can program your radio.

Just do some googling for local repeaters and make note of the freq, offset, and pl tone and you will be good to go.

Is that legal in your locale?  It's a no go here.

AFRCOM is a wonderful place/group

Its great to see new hams getting on the air...

I was on 146.52 the other day having a nice qso with a few local hams and we were talking about digital modes and I said something about ar15.com is the reason I got into ham and digital modes...  One of the other guys said huh, I read stuff on ar15.com all the time didn't even know they had a ham section, told him where to find it and hopefully he checks it out.

The UV5R gets reasonable reviews... the differences between the different variants are cosmetic, but be aware that the extended battery works best with the plain original case design, so no + or additional letters in the model number.

We just had a brief thread on a newer Baofeng model which at least some of the reviews say has superior RF performance.  No extra size battery though.
