...for me anyway.

A while back my Father-in-law (and Elmer) got me the TenTec - 4 Band QRP Go Pack.

This weekend, I'm taking the boys camping, so I thought I'd take that radio along, throw the dipole up in a tree, and use it "in the field" (if a State Park counts as "the field")
My CW is pretty rusty, so it may get ugly, but hopefully should be fun.

This radio will receive 3.2-16 MHz SSB and CW but only send CW.  Any recommendations of things to listen for that 9 and 11 year old boys would like?

Sweet!  What band(s) are you planning to operate on?

Awesome! Have fun! I keep saying I'm gonna do that from the peaks along the AT but I have yet to actually lug the gear with me.

ETA: That's an awesome setup!

The radio covers 80-40-30-20M and the antenna covers 40-through-10, but you have to manually shorten one leg to tune on 30M, so I'm basically confined to 40 or 20M.  I'll probably start on 40m and see what happens, then may try 20.

The kit is pretty neat.  It comes with the radio, antenna, power supply/li-ion charger, and pack.  Batteries not included.  I "repurposed" some old laptop batteries and made 2 3.8Ah battery packs for it. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/656592_My_Homebrew_Contest_Entry.html  I also took a car cigarette lighter adapter and put Power Poles on it, so I can operate from the car.  Now I just need a bug mounted on the dash board!

If I was packing this, I would probably go with a random wire and small tuner.  The antenna and balun is kinda weighty.

Your gonna be happier with the efficiency of the dipole. An alternative that's efficient and easier to deploy would be one of the PAR endfedz. The PAR QRP antenna will do 10M/20M/40M with out a tuner. Looks like fun BTW.

You might consider a Hendricks SOTA Halfwave Tuner.  I have one, it's small and lightweight.

Well, that was kind of a bust.  I could hear just fine.  I was copying people from Turkey and Russia on 40m phone who were contesting.  I would call CQ, but got now answers.  I wonder if that's because my code is slow and no-one wants to slow down to my crawling speed
