Just curious if anyone is using MURS and what their thoughts are. I think I'm more interested in the security alert feature at the end of our driveway and the 2-way comms are just icing on the cake when I'm out in the garage since the wife isn't a ham. Any experience you can share? What brand/model is preferred?

For comms, I think MURS is far superior to FRS and at least as good as CB.  I don't think it is as capable as professional grade (not bubble packed) GMRS.

As far as for security, the Dakota stuff seems to be in fairly popular. I hear it almost daily all around the Cincinnati tri-state area.

It's always fun to QSO with Walmart and Costco.

ETA;  I don't intentionally interfere with Walmart or Costco (or anybody else) and immediately change channels when I find I've moved into an area they're operating in. Also, Costco managers are way more relaxed.

We use MURS for Drive Way Alert, plan to grow system as $ allows.  Kids, mom, etc can use w/ no problem.  I really like my Dakota Driveway system....I do not like their HT-it's too clunky (AA batteries it devours, no drop in  charger, etc...).

Use the Motion Sensing Alert, skip the HT (YMMV)

I bought mine from the guy who advertises on Rawles site (Survivalblog) linked

going on 3 years in place-

I don't have any personal experience with MURS handhelds, but the Ritron JMX-146D looks pretty rugged.

How does the driveway alert work? It looks like a long cord. Do vehicles drive over that? Or do you bury that and vibrations set it off? If that's the case, I guess it can't  work with a paved driveway?

I use the Motion Sensing Box that I've built a small cover for and it's set about chest high at drive entrance.  I did the heat shrink mod on the antenna too.

Looking forward to pics! We're somewhat rural with deer everywhere. I wonder how often they'd trip the motion sensor and if I need the driveway cable model? SC, you get any false alarms from non vehicles?

that is a fence board from Lowes cut down to shed the unit.  Some deer traffic now and then...not too bad though...and we live WAY out!

hope it helps-ask more if I can help

ETA: the sensor lights red like the one in your hallway when activated, and may spook the deer if they trip........?

We use MURS everyday at work, 1 to 2 watts, we never hear anybody else.

At my house, I'm about a mile or two away from Walmart, they use MURS too, occasionally I'll hear them on one of my open freqs.

We use MURS at work also, and my family uses GMRS-my GMRS license covers everyone in the house
