Ok what is the difference between the 9th and 10th edition on the ARRL Extra Class License Manual. I know the question pool was changed this month, and I know the book comes with software to practice the test. I don't care about that software as I have other ways to practice the test.
The material it self should be the same in the two books correct? The local club has the old edition I could check out and use to study with. I don't see that the book it sell changed much if any. Thanks. |

Eh ... not quite. The old Extra pool had 738 questions. The new Extra pool has 702 questions. Just for grins took one of the online practice tests at QRZ.com. Saw a couple questions that were reworded (better written) from the old pool. Maybe one or two new questions but it covered material you should have already studied. Most of the questions were verbatum from the old pool.
From what I was told the question pool for the new test will be larger. Instead of a pool of 500 questions it will be a pool of 700 questions and the test itself will be harder this time. BTW: Did pass the practice test with 82%. Hadn't studied or taken a practice test since I passed Extra 8 months ago. Use the flash card method from this site and take the sample tests. Its by far the best place to bone up for Extra. The site works well on a smart phone, so you can study just about anywhere.
Ham Exam This site learns which questions you understand and which ones you don't. It does this by tracking your answers to every question. It then applies a weight to each question, using the following priorities: 1st priority - questions you haven't seen yet 2nd priority - questions you have previously answered wrong 3rd priority - questions you have answered correctly Using this system, you are guaranteed that you will eventually see all of the questions from a given test. You are more likely to see questions that you need help with again and again until you get them right. I feel this is a great way to see what questions you need to work on. |

Yep I know all about the pratice test sites, and thats ALL I used for the tech and Gen tests. For the most part I just memorized the test questions. It would be much easier, for me anyway, if I had a little back ground so I could under stand the question and answer a little better. |

One thing the ARRL manual does is go into great depth on the subject matter. Kinda if you asked the ARRL what time is it they will tell you how to build an atomic clock. If you can study and understand the material as presented in the ARRL manual, even if its the previous edition, you should be able to pass. Radio is a mature debugged technology and not a whole lot except the regulations has changed in the last 40 years.

I failed to see any reason to learn a lot of the electronics that they have in the manual. If your into that sort of thing, well great! For me, I have no interest in it. I was looking for the expanded operating limits, and thats about it. As such, I just memorized the questions, and only looked at the correct answer. Block out all of the others. That, and take 2-3 practice exams daily. After about 3 weeks, I went in and took the exam and passed with flying colors.Some of the old timers get a little pissed when they hear about this, but nobody said you must buy into the all or nothing attitude to enjoy a hobby. Take the parts that interest you, and skip the rest.

All I want are the extra bands, the no hassle of license renewal, and a free chance to change my call sign to W5GNZ.

| Wont hurt. Learn it to pass the test, and purge it after you get the ticket. Like I said, some guys are into that portion of the hobby as they like to tinker and experiment. I do neither, but focus on operating different modes(portable, mobile, ect,...) Once I got my Extra, I just let it fade away. |
