our volunteer fire department was given a box of kenwood tk-2170-k radios by another department. we need to get them programmed and the local radio shop wants 65.00ea. we have about 15 of these and that is going to get expensive. i have a kenwood programming cable and i am 99% sure it will work with these. anyone have an idea where i can find the software?
thanks mike |

Google search found the software for sale for $75. Not cheap but less than 65/radio. KPG-101D appears to be the requisite software package. You may want to go here and become a member. Its a Yahoo Group. Sometimes you can find someone willing to "share"
Better yet..send me an e-mail and I will send you the file ;) I found it but I haven't used it or unzipped it. You will need a program that will unpack a file with a .rar extension. I made it a .zip file. |

thanks guys. our department is seriously cash strapped right now and i am trying to raise money for air packs. as bad as we needed radios too the cost of getting the local shop to do this would have set us back a good bit of need cash. I can relate....our dept is too. You should look in to the AFG grants.... |

I can relate....our dept is too. You should look in to the AFG grants.... we are grabbing every grant we can get, sadly so is every other department and the grants are getting thin. our town is small and has a VERY small tax base. with the increase in fuel costs the city has been forced to drastically cut back the funding the FD received just to make payroll and keep the pd on the road. their gear is in rough shape and honestly the air packs we have should have been retired 3-4 years ago. we have a group of VERY dedicated young hose dragers here and us old guys are doing our best to ensure they have the best possible gear we can get them. i can't watch an 18yr get hurt because of worn out gear. |

Google search found the software for sale for $75. Not cheap but less than 65/radio. Have you ever priced /\/\ RSS/CPS?
$75 divided by 15 radios = $5 per radio. It's worth that just to program them once and never touch them again but you won't, and now you'll be able to use the software for years changing things around. If you know a ham that has a radio it programs, you can charge him $10 to make changes if he does not have the software himself and make some of the money back over time. |

Motorola has service agreements for their software...$300 for 3 years. Ugh! |

Not all the software is $300, plus you get every upgraded piece of software that comes out in the three year timeframe.
Remember, /\/\ wants to sell 100s of $3000-6000 radios at a time, so the cost of software is really not an issue to the customers they really want. Maybe the people who donated the radios have the software they will give you as well? Not an option for Motorola licensing, but the other players are much more lenient on these things. |

I had enough of their BS 20 years ago, they're worse than M$. |
