| When broadcasting/listening on HF frequencies, I understand you can use USB or LSB. But how do you know which to use? Just listen and go back and forth? Or is their a set SB for each HF band? |

The convention (not rules/regs) is, for frequencies below 10 mhz, Lower Side Band. Frequencies above, use Upper Side Band.
Exceptions: 60 meters (5 mhz) uses USB. Also, guys that use refurbished old military radios use USB on the lower bands, as many of those radios only work USB. |

Yep, merely convention left over from the old days when the design of the radios motivated those choices.
And yes, Olivia as well as all the other "sound card" digital modes are "always" operated with the radio in USB mode. There are some modes that actually don't care, but it's easier to operate within the conventions. It's actually kind of funny when you operating outside the conventions. People will go out of their way to jump your shit over it thinking it's against the rules and reg's. |

When V5/DH3WO first came on the air in Namibia before this past Christmas he was sitting on 7126 running LSB. I think a few US guys worked him but most of us didn't transmit since we'd be out of band. I kept tuning around that freq though and later I could hear SSB but not tune it in. Switched to USB and there he was on the same freq clear as can be. I worked him right away and so did a few other US guys. Someone put it on DX Watch too. |

Moose and Squirrel net is basically USB. You are right about going USB on 75 and 40 meters. A lot of people will INSIST it is illegal. One time my buddies and I used USB on 40m for grins. Within 5 minutes somebody started sending 'LID' in CW over and over again on top of us
