I have aquired a new (to  me) FT-100d. Anyone use this rig? Pros/cons? Things not to do/tips/tricks? No HF yet, just VHF/UHF of previously mentioned j-pole. Really good results with it, just wanting to know more.

It has been modded with something to do with the fan, from what the previous owner said. He didn't say anything about any other mods, but it will go WAAAYYY out of band, and I thought that was unusual to be able to transmit like that unless it was 'hacked'.

make sure no one CBerized it.  those are great rigs, and also popular for 11m.  get it going and we can try ground wave 10m

Can I get on it with a tech license? I took the general tonight and missed it by 1 question....damn I need to study more...

BTW-anyone know how to computer control this thing? Change the memories from the computer? I have the cable on the way, but not sure the best software to use for it...

i have one, great little radio but the receive is a little deaf. its not bad but you do miss some signals down in the noise. it can not be programmed via a PC. you can use HRD with it though. as a tech you have access to 6m and some 10m. 10m has been jumping lately so get you an antenna made for the tech section of 10 and give it a go. make sure to NOT press the ptt button without an antenna connected. you will fry the finals and then it will be nothing more than a high $ scanner. if the finals go out on you its done because Yaesu no longer makes them. not sure if you can find them anywhere else but if you can i havent heard of it. if you dont have a PS radio shack sells a 19A one that works great with no RF. think i paid $80 for mine, might have been less though. the fan mod is because of the poss of overheat when on 2m i believe. do a search there is a FT-100D group on yahoo groups i believe. define way out of band. there are several mods for the radio to "open up" the TX. i believe the radio lacks 60m TX but opening it up will fix that.

No programming??? Well that just pisses me off....I sent Yeasu a nasty gram asking them WTF and if there was a program for it I missed. I would say that since the CATS data is available, I could code it myself, but I am sure someone would have already done it by now if it was possible. I got a offer on a 857d for $500, I may trade it in for. Dunno yet. That is almost a deal breaker for me, but I love the radio so far.

Programming it so far seems like a bitch, so if you have any tips on that to make it easier let me know.

Thanks for the heads up.

The fan mod was done most likely to keep it cool. The FT-100/D's are prone to final failure. If it can transmit out of band, it has been modified. I would at least pop the top on it and make sure that who ever did the mod didn't use the magic screwdriver. Aside from that, the FT-100D's are nice radios.

Also, as a tech, you have SSB privileges on 10m from 28.300-28.500mhz SSB Only. You also have full use of the 50mhz band when it is open.

Just got off the repeater with my net controller who has a few yaesu's...he said there is a prog called FTCAT,  I think-he said it WILL program the ft100d. I have yet to locate it, but I will be looking harder when my cable comes in the mail this week. I will keep yall posted for those of you who own this radio-it is the first I have heard of it too, but I hope he is right. It is a nice radio, and I hate to have a little thing like memory management take the shine off it

The Net Controller may have been thinking of FTBCat by G4HFQ.

I've not used it but here is a link to download it if you want to check it out...

that is for controlling the radio, not programming it. you can do the same thing with HRD. you can only program 2m/70cm freqs in it what else do you want to program?

no need to pop the top, the mod is done behind the face plate. LINK. HERE is a info page.
