CONGRATS on taking your first step in to a much larger (and expensive) world

Congrats!

Anyone who suggests amateur radio is a dying hobby must be blind. Two new hams on arfcom in one day is pretty good growth I'd say.

First, WELCOME to both of you new guys to ham radio!!!  Congrats!

I think Arfcom has done more than its fair share in encouraging the growth of ham radio!

I will get to inherit most of my father's 2 meter and 440 gear and am going to try and get his original call sign.
My first job will be to rehab his old repeater.
Thanks for the support guys and I look forward to talking with a bunch of you as soon as I get things set up.

This I'm going to second with a big FUCK YEAH! Between AR-Jedi's Ham 101 thread and just reading all yall's" tales of adventure on the radio" and seeing the practical aspect of being able to communicate without using cellphones and whatnot-I was hooked. I should have done this  back in 92' when I was playing around in the MARS shack out to sea, but there were other things to occupy my time then (dumbass). But I learn something new here everytime I log on. My VE's were a great bunch of guys and told me to stop by anytime and all the time and they would teach me more. All of them new my old Elmer who passed recently, so we spent time reminiscing about him after the test.

Welcome to a wonderful hobby. There are so many facets to it that you will never be able to do them all. Find something that interests you and pursue it. Got a question? Ask. The knowledge base is deep here.

You wanna know who has an extensive antenna farm? ART BELL, that's who! (Art Bell, from coast to coast AM fame.)

Yup. Married a chicky-snack Philipina, spent a year or two trying to get her permanent status here in the US, then was told he had to start all over again.

Sorta pisses you off when you think of all those 'immigrants' coming over the southern border. But you see, he didn't have that option: being a celebrity (no matter how much you dislike him, he IS  a celeb of sorts), and a celebrity that takes a somewhat anti-establishment slant, he couldn't afford to have an illegal alien with him.
