Working the can't fail thread etc, taking my test Saturday and had a few questions about a mobile rig.
I've been listening on a Yaesu FT-270R and can't wait to get my license so I can use the PTT! I am looking for a mobile rig to put in my truck. I know I want 2m and 70cm, but saw that Ham Station, which is a 1/2 mile from me, has a quad band, Yaesu FT-8900 factory repack for 389 that includes the ysk8900 kit. Is this a good deal? Anyone scared of factory repacks? My thought was buy once cry once. Any idea's for an antenna to meet 10m,6m,2m,70cm that's won't smack overpasses? 2m and 70cm will be main focus and may go with just a dual band antenna. Open for suggestions! |
| Save your money. 10M and 6M on mobile rigs is FM so you'll need to have a repeater in your area or you won't be getting much use out of it. I have two 8800s and want more. It's a great mobile rig and while it may not have all of the bells and whistles that some radios have it's very user-friendly and is rock solid. |

Between you and Gibby, the 8800 sounds like the way to go. Any ideas on antennas? It's a company truck, so no NMO. |

Sweet, anything to look for in a dual band 2m/70cm antenna? yes. the words "Comet" and "SBB5NMO". http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=10&f=22&t=647239&page=2#11042406 ar-jedi |

There's really nothing wrong with the FT8900. The repack deal is likely less expensive than a new FT8800, and the extra bands don't do anything bad.
6m can be fun during band openings, and there are a few repeaters scattered around. 10m FM is a curiosity at best, and you'd need a General class license to use the 10m FM. I worked Louisiana from the vehicle as I was driving away from the Dayton Hamvention on 52.525. If you get the FT8900, there is an antenna which is almost identical to the SBB5 but which includes 6m, the Opek HVU610. I got one at Dayton for about 75% of the normal price of the SBB5.
