Which platform has the widest variety of applications available for the shack?

Windows, unfortunately.  I'm not a Windows fan but that's what I run.  When I can afford it I'm going to buy an iMac for the shack and dual boot.

Why a Mac?  I'm interested in seeing if I can get a PDA to run some things due to its small size and low power demand but honestly have no clue about this.  With so many smartphones and smalller devices like tablets you would think those would be ideal especially for the more mobile setups.  I would be interested to see what the general consensus is on this as well as whether or not smaller computing devices have already made their way into use.

I'm thinking of using an older netbook for this purpose. Small, Light, and usually good battery life.

My dedicated shack computer will be a Mac Mini. It will be running windows through bootcamp.

Ubuntu (I think most Linux) will dual boot with Windows.

Im pretty stupid when it comes to computers (and ham) but I had it working on one of my systems.

HRD will run on Ubuntu via Wine, and fldigi runs natively.  There are 81 Amateur Radio packages in the Ubuntu repository right now.

But will DM780? Last time I checked it wouldn't. DM780 is hands down, the best digital comms program there is.

Yeah, RHCP had me all excited until I realized his statement might not include DM780. HRD didn't work last time I tried it under WINE though.

You can get (less polished) rig control natively under Linux via FlDigi though.

Windows, and be sure to set the time to UTC just to make it an official Ham PC.
