I have one of these on the way:

and one of these to put it on:

Shure mics don't seem to be very popular for use with ham radios, but they're good mics and built like tanks.  I wanted a desk mic I didn't have to hold, and I couldn't justify spending a load of money on a studio type mic and then using it with a ham radio which negates pretty much everything you gain by using an expensive condenser mic.

If anyone's interested I'll report back on how it works out.

One of my ham buddies used a sm57 on his ts520. It sounded great. He also used a 444d for a while. His newer rig, a ts430, likes the mc60 best.

I have an SM48.  Guitar Center had a smokin' hot deal last year.  It's plenty good for SSB and I get good audio reports.

The 57 lacks an on/off switch.  The 58 (aka the "highball") can be had with a switch.

These mics are best used about 3" - 6" from your mouth.

I think I'm just going to use vox or the transmit button on the front of the radio.  Maybe I'll cobble together a foot switch to see how I like it.

Back when I did some audio stuff I found the same thing, they get boomy if you eat the mic.  That had something to do with my choice, I want something i can sit on the desk and not have to be right on top of.

Be careful with the VOX. My buddy broadcast his side of a phone call with his G/F once...

I prefer Electro Voice to Shure, but almost any decent quality pro vocal mic will work well.  I do have a vintage Shure 555 that I use sometimes

I'd love to have one, I'm waiting to find a deal on one somewhere or a basket case I can rebuild.

Mine was a minor rebuild... the windscreen foam as well as the internal shock mounts for the element were all disintegrated.

On/off switch on the mic itself is pretty useless.  It's straightforward to build a mic adapter for the radio... connector for the mic input, and a momentary contact pushbutton on a cord for PTT.

ETA:  here's a pic I took a while back for a QSL card idea... I thought the "Elvis" mic looked cool
