I've got an oppurtunity to trade a IC-718 with AH-4 for a FT-857D with LDG tuner (model # escapes me at the moment.)

He bought the 857 thinking he'd do more portable work, but wants a base now. I wish my IC-718 was more portable as I operate portable more often than I do from home. 2M SSB is also intruiding to me.

Anyway, we're talking about a trade and he mentioned that the 857 had the MARS/CAP mod done. I have no reason to do the mod, and had previously decided not to mod any of my radios, but then this chance comes along. Would the fact that a radio had had the mod done steer you away from a trade?

Thoughts??

Not if you can confirm everything else is working properly.  I might use it as a negotiation point to get to a lower price.

None of my stuff if mod'd, but I think if done properly there's really no functional issue with it.

Personally, I don't want anything to do with a radio that's been "opened up" or "Mars/Cap" modified.  But hey, that's just me.

Not sure if the 857 is like alot of yeasu radios and opened up by just the removal of a solder joint.Look it up if its a very simple mod I would not worry able it but I would look at as a bargaining point.

heres the mod , http://www.kb2ljj.com/data/yaesu/ft-857.htm 2nd mod down , looks pretty simple . I would undo it and reset the radio.

Probably 50% of radios get "modded" immediately after purchase, it's a non-issue.

I would take an 857 over a 718 any day of the week. I'd trade and remove the mod. It's simple. Conversely just ignore the mod. As long as you're a good op you won't be trying to xmit out of band anyway right?

As long as it works that sounds like an excellent trade.

If the radio works, and looks decent do the trade your getting the better end of the deal.  As was already said, its really a non-issue.  In 30+ years of being involved in the radio hobby, it has been very rare to acquire a used radio that has NOT been modded.

And again, as said, if it really bothers you for whatever reason, have the mod reversed.

Same here. Saves me from having to mod it.

The "mod" is the removal of a single diode. You can put it back if you want.

As long as the diode wasn't removed by a drunken monkey, it should be just fine. If the radio works properly, go for it.

I mod all of my radios. If it's an emergency (when you're allowed to use whatever frequency at your disposal is likely to get you help the fastest) it's not the time to go looking on the internet to figure out how to open up the TX.

Thanks for all the responses. Which basically just confirmed my own thoughts. Shouldn't be an issue and I can alway undo the mod as long as it was doen correctly and everything works properly.
