Question posed to me by another and hoping for some group input.

Would studying the current ARRL General Test study guide, plus taking current on-line tech/generl  level practice tests get one through both the tech/general exams?

thanks for the input.

Here's my copy/paste.  I didn't think of all this by myself, there are lots of contributors here.  I've just collected most of it in one place for you.

Go to this site:

http://www.w5ddl.org/

And on the left side you will see links to Classroom Presentations (in PowerPoint) for Tech and General, as well as links to practice exams for Tech, General, and Extra class.   If you don't have PowerPoint, there is a link for a free PowerPoint Viewer.

In each of those two links you will find both the separate chapters, as well as a zip file containing all of the chapters.

Here is another site with classes:

There are also courses of study that may be subscribed to at:

(NOTE- When you print out these guides, yes, print them... take a Magic Marker and black out all the wrong answers.  This way you study only the correct answers and everything else looks unfamiliar.  Seriously, print, black out, study.  Just take my word for it and do it.)

Here's what to do... study the study guides a few evenings. Then begin doing the W5DDL classroom presentations. You can do one or two a night.

Also begin taking the practice tests. With all of those sites, each time you take the test it will have a different random draw of questions from the question pool... just like the real test you will take. I would also suggest you take the practice test on a different site each time. This will help you get used to the appearance of the test being different, just as it will be when you take the actual test. Take two or three (or more if you have time) of the practice tests each night after going through a chapter from W5DDL.

By the time you are finished with the W5DDL classes you will be ready for the Tech test, and you will pass.

BUT WAIT!!! There's more!!!

When you are confident that you will pass the Tech, and are passing by 90% or more, begin study for the General. If you are smart enough to pass the Tech, you are smart enough for the General, too.

With the General comes greatly expanded band privileges. Keep up with studying the Tech guides and the practice tests, but add the General.

You can do this!

wow, A Free Man definitely has is down!

I appreciate all the responses.  I was appnroached by a Major in my Reserve unit who commented on the antenna on my truck.  He had been 'somewhat" familiar and always interested. I  gave him a demo of my mobile an HT's and my thoughts to acquiring the tech license.  He replied later that he is now pursuing study and an HT.

Thanks again, 11b4v

This. The General isn't that more difficult.

There are quite a few questions on the general test that are the same on the tech test.  I'm talking word for word.

not meaning to rez an older post, but there is some great information in here.

i took and passed my Tech and General on the same day b/c of the people that are in this forum.  I got great help and honest answers for what i am sure were some n00b questions.  i was at the testing center to take the Tech exam, i told the VE's that i was studying to take my general next.  they said "pfft, take it today you might be surprised."   i took it and passed!  i had the biggest grin on my face all the way home.

i took a bit of time off and have decided to start studying for my Extra in the next few weeks.  i am looking for a class in my area on the subject b/c i am a little behind the curve on some of the physics and electronics questions on the test.  it is a new year and no classes are being offered yet, but they soon will be.

again thanks for all the previous help, i KNOW i will have more questions in the future.

Congrats, Scott!

Yes, I encourage all who want to test to study for the General, too, more if they think they can, but to at least study for the General in conjunction with the Tech.  There is a lot of overlap, and the General gets you a LOT more privileges.  As others have said, the most bang for the buck.  The Extra earns you only a little more.  I'm an Extra, but had I not passed the Extra, and never passed it, I would still be happy with what I could do with the General except for one thing...  Being a CVE and an Extra, I can administer tests for General and Extra.  I could not do that being only a General.

But as far as operating... you really want that General!  Go for it!  It's really not that much harder than the Tech.
