Well, here we go again...

On a trip and camping, so tonight was a good time to try to program the GP380 radios as some of us have posted about  several times.

First, I've never seen so many features in one commercial radio. Holy cow, I need a university edjucation to figure this out.

Anyhow, I copied the disk from the ebay seller to my docs.

Then I read the 'read me doc' for the USB cable and plugged it into a USB port and XP found and loaded the driver OK. Actually, XP may have gone onto the web to get it, I couldn't tell what was going on.

Then, worried about the last thread and the confusion re the correct SW to use, I just picked this one:

"C:\Program Files\Motorola\Professional GP300 GM300 CPS\R03.08.03_EN\gp300.exe"

and hooked the radio to the USB cable and tried to read it.

Amazingly it read. Then I saved the code plug [whatever that is ] like everyone said would be a big mistake not to do.

I tried to rewrite the C-P and got 3 warnings about decoder somethingorother and 2 other warnings. Hunting through a zillion options I unchecked a couple boxes until I didn't get any warnings anymore when I clicked the  "write device" button, then I held my breath and let'er rip.

After screwing up a few times, I got the new codeplug with my frequency and PL tone and channel spacing configured and loaded.

I've got a ~15 year old freq counter made by OptoElectronics velcro'ed on a mounting to the wall at my computer 'desk'  in the stealth trailer and checked the frequency and I was on freq [counter needs cal'd, the radios are likely more accurate than the old counter].

Then I saved the new codeplug and hooked up the 2nd radio and wrote to it after saving its codeplug.

Both radios talk to each other since for starters, I set them to a simplex freq.

Now I'm trying to find how to lock the channel selector.

Anyone know how?

I'm going to start reading the book that came with the radios. The book says it's for GP 328 and 338 and the radios say on the case GP380. This was discussed before but I'm still don't understand the difference.

Can anyone help with the answers?

I'll be happy to help others get going as far as my limited knowledge goes.

External antenna adapters look like 1/8" phone jacks with a screw thread at the body, sort of like the VX7, etc. They are about $7.

Another question...

Do I need to use preemphasis/deemphasis for PL tones with 12.5kc channel spacing? It's set off for PL and on for voice.

One of the radios has some audio distortion and the transmit freqs are OK, can't check RX until I get back. Sounds like the PL tone deviation is set too high. I've compared the codeplug settings to make sure they are the same.

The pre-emphasis/de-emphasis is used only when the other units you are communicating with have the same setup. Otherwise, the audio will be weak and washed out. If I don't know, then I leave it off.
