Hey, y'all. I am trying to sync my VX7r to my laptop with a usb/sync cable and download the freqs from my VX-7r into VX-7 Commander. I keep getting a 'run time error 8020 - Error reading comm device' message. It's a brand new cord, I set the comm port to #1 in both the device manager and in Commander. Still get the error message. The radio reads clone, then when I push the band button for 'clone tx' the error message pops up. In the transfer window in Commander I get: Opening Port... Waiting for first data block... ERROR: Timeout while waiting for first data block. Number of bytes in buffer: 0 Dump of buffer: Port closed. Any help? |

If you find that your cable is inserted properly in the radio, and everything else is fine (com port settings, etc. ), you might have the problem I had, which was that I twisted the cable too hard and broke the connection of the wires to the radio mic screw cable. I had to slice it open, re-wire and re-solder, and then heat-shrink it back. It looks ugly as sin now, but it works. |

Quoted: Sutton....Where did you get your cable from? I'm looking for one. Found a bunch of online sites that suggest making your own. You just order something from Yaesu? Any recommendations? Hey, BTW...didn't you use to live out here near me in SW Indiana? I got the cable off of Ebay....it came from Hong Kong. Didn't realize that when I bought it. I'd recommend getting one from Yeasu. At least you have some recourse if it's a bad cable. Ever return something to Hong Kong? Yeah, I used to live in Evansville/Henderson, but about 5 years back I got a job in Texas...and I have been working here ever since. |

Yeah...saw those cables on Ebay too. Was thinking about springing for one. I might just try ordering from Yaseu then. Thanks for the recommendation. You're missing out on so much here in Evansville......you won't even recognize the city when you come back to visit. (not really) |

Quoted: http://valley-ent.com/catalog/images/vx7usbos.jpg Just ordered a VX-5R cable from this place. They said it was out of stock but it got here in just a few days. Does it work? Seems a lot of the cheap ones don't work or won't last. |

the cable should work.
few things.... serial or usb cable. if serial are you using a usb converter? i had similar issues with mine. i found the rubber "gasket" tends to keep the cable from seating properly. also i found trying to screw the cable in tight rips the threads off the cable. honetly i have to fiddle with mine everytime i load it. once you hit the sweet spot DON'T TOUCH IT till your done. |

There is a data rate setting in VX-7R commander software, some computers will try to send or receive data too fast for the radio and cause all kinds of weird errors.
I had the same problem and had to switch to the old computer to get it to work. Check under the help file in the software it will give you some insight. When you click the comm port setting you will an exclamation mark to the right of it, this is the setting. Read the help file, also if you are on a newer computer try a slower computer and see if that helps. Also for anyone that may have the problem, before you program you have to establish a connection with the radio first by downloading the radio data. ETA: Also you can try to screw the cable all the way in, and then backing it out 1/8-1/4 turn, there is a sweet spot for it. I used a silver sharpie to mark a spot that should point forward. Once I resolved those issues I have not had a problem since. |

I got my cables from KAWAMALL on eBay. Work well for both radios as well as the cable from same provider for FT8800. My issue was all about the windows version I was running. It will not work with windows 7. |

Mine worked, finally, after a number of tries. Sometimes I'd get a clone error, sometimes the VX7 Commander software said it was writing but the radio wasn't in clone mode, and sometimes after the write ended the radio stayed in clone mode instead of powering down & then up; there seemed to be no rhyme, reason, or consistency to the errors. I guess it's a combination of all the idiosyncrasies of the plug, the software, & the radio. Quoted: Quoted: My issue was all about the windows version I was running. It will not work with windows 7. One I got a quality cable, mine ran fine in Windows 7. I don't know what cable/chipset you're using, but the Prolific OEM drivers for Windows 7 don't work. I found these after some searching, and they worked like a charm on the first try. |
