What would you recommended for someone just getting into radios?

need something that doesn't take up a lot of space.

A license doesn't take up much space.

the process is the same as for any other purchase...
1) define the problem you are trying to solve.
2) learn as much as possible about the potential solutions.
3) research available product options and compare trade-offs in capabilities and costs.
4) make purchase.
5) read the instructions and become familiar with all aspects of the product to assure safe, effective, and reliable long term use.

the above process applies to firearms, cars, LDC TVs, pressure washers, chainsaws, and of course ham radios.

item 1 is (usually) the hardest part.  you probably do it subconsciously and with great ease on subjects you are familiar with.  for example, if you identify a need for an inexpensive, reliable, easy to shoot rifle that shoots inexpensive ammo, you might end up quickly deciding that a Ruger 10/22 chambered in .22LR fits the bill exactly.

so, in your own words, identify the problem to us –– what specific communications capabilities would you like to have?

doesn't take up a lot of space where?
in your house?  (fixed station)
in your vehicle? (mobile station)
in your pack?  (portable station)
