There is an Icom 718 for sale here and was thinking of getting it.
There is also a Yaesu 757 GXII for sale. I am leaning towards the 757 but wanted to get opinions. I want to some PSK and the 757 is not compatible with HRD. Thats not a big issue though Which ever radio I get will be my first HF rig. I have a lot to learn yet and will be testing next week for my general. So, lay it on me. Thanks KD0DOE |

When I got into HF I bought a Icom 718 it has been a great radio. It is a entry level radio, easy to operate and works very well. I have a LDG AT 7000 tuner, SignaLink USB interface for digital modes, HRD is compatible with the 718.
Look on EHam.com at the reviews of the radio. Hope this helps. KE7L** |

Ive read some reviews and it seems the 718 has a little bit better feedback.
The asking price on the 718 is 425.00 and the 757GXII is 350.00 The owner of the Icom is an older gent with low income and could use the money. He doesnt want to sell it but has some bills to pay. I just got off of the phone with him and was talking to him for about an hour. Very nice man. I am inclined to help him out a little. There is a swap meet/flea market coming up next weekend and I am going to go to that before I go test so I may find something else. With so many radios out there, its a hard decision what to buy. FOr some reason I am a Yaesu guy (I have no reaosn why, dad was a Kenwood and Yaesu guy). You guys are the reason I love coming here. |
| Big +1 for the '718. I just retired mine having upgraded to the new IC-7200 (IF DSP rocks!) but it's a great rig. It was my first radio. I got it because it's very easy to use and straightforward to interface to HRD (which is a great program). Highly recommended. |

I have the 757GXII and paid $300 for the radio, power supply/speaker, the auto-tuner, and the matching desk mic. Works well enough but I have nothing to compare it to. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/paul1960/Xterra/Ham%20Radio/YaesuFT-757Station.jpg That's a nice set up Master Chief! |
| I read alot of good things about the 718 but every one of them I saw used were not much under new price . So why take a chance with used when you can get new but then I compared the features of the ft450 to the ic 718 . The ft 450 cost a little more up front but after buying filters the FT 450 would be cheaper and I would also get 6 m . If I could have found a 718 say under 400 I would have went that route . Just like 840s , there are 2 here for sell that I know are good radios but I just couldnt see paying for all most what I could get the 450 for . |
| I'd been happy with my 718. Last year I started having problems and it appears that something's wrong on the receive end. I hooked up a TS-2000 and I clearly hear stations on the Kenwood that I don't hear on the Icom using the same antenna. Outside of this problem it's a great starter radio. One of these days I'll get off my ass and send it in for repair. |
