Been thinking of picking up an EEE-PC or other smaller ~10" for digital modes. Don't really use my laptop for anything hardcore....maybe some web surfing...Garmin GPS Software....and HRD/DM780 for SSTV, PSK, OLIVIA, etc.
Anyone got a setup similar to this? How does it perform? |

I have an Eee 1000 HA, which so far works OK. Have not been able to coax the full 7 hours ASUS claims is possible out of it, but they also say "YMMV" and that it depends on a few full discharge-and-recharge cycles.
Coworker has one of the Acer netbooks, which also works for him, despite less battery life. The smaller screens are no handicap used with HRD, Commander, Winlink2k/Airmail, etc. (Have installed Paclink, still trying to get it configured. Waiting impatiently for Winmor...) |

No problem, but I've really only used it with Pactor 1.

I have an HP tx1410us tablet PC that I use for digital modes and to control my pactor 3 modem. I use MixW for MT63, Olivia, and the amateur stuff, PSK and such. For MARS use I also have Airmail set up for Pactor 3 and Telenet e-mail functionality. It has a 12 1/2 inch display, 200 gig hard drive, 2 gig ddr ram, DVD burner, camera, plenty of usb ports, plenty of pin jacks, etc. I really like this little guy. It's my Army MARS deployment computer. It's a tablet pc so you can turn the display around, lay it down, and write on the screen with a stylus...and it has OCR to copy it into an e-nail or a document. Very cool. It also takes dictation. I found it at Circuit City for around a grand, but there are some models which don't have some of the features mine has, like a fingerprint reader, you can pick up for a bit less. $750-900. I swear by this little machine. Do youself a favor and check them out before you buy anything. 73 |
| You could always look into getting a Toughbook CF-28 or CF-29 maybe a CF-18 tablet. Now that the CF-30s and CF-19s have been out for a year or so the older models are starting to show up as surplus a lot more. Gotta love a computer that you can spill your FULL cup of coffee on and just turn in over and blow it off!!! Plus I think the Toughbooks are pretty much the only option left with built in serial port anymore. |

Well....i bought one.
Asus EEE-PC 1000H. Was thinking of the HE, but didn't see the point in the extra cash. Best Buy has a 14 day return policy, so i figured i'd give it a try. First thing i did was wipe the main partitions, and install XP Pro (kept the restore partitions so i could go back to factory default if i needed to return it) then installed truecrypt. It won't let me encrypt the whole drive, because of the restore partitions. So i went with one large partition, and did the boot disc encryption on it. So far it's running great. PSK and SSTV no problem. |
